Lump Charcoal Question
Posted on 6/6/21 at 2:49 pm

I have a BGE and I'm searching for a larger lump charcoal brand. Currently all the popular brands seem to have smaller chunks of wood resulting in hotter/faster cooks and when I'm looking for a lower/slower cook time such as for a brisket or butt it can become difficult to manage the temperature. I can get the temp down to the 250 degree or 275 degree target, but I always seem to have to add more too it late in the cook. Or do I need to light the fire and before putting the meat on add more lump? Any help is appreciated.

I’ve noticed this too. I started buying this
And haven’t had a problem.

FOGO Super Premium(tan bag)has larger pieces and burns great.

Im not much help in that all I can say is that I light my lump charcoal with a propane burner. I use it as my base coal bed for my wood splits so that way I'm only burning wood. Makes for better flavor.
Also, you'll always be adding to the firebox as the cook goes on.

This for me.
Get the Super Premium. Not the Premium (Black bag).

If you have the room, you can make your own. I do. Since Laura droppe 15 or so trees (oaks and hickories) on my property, I haven't bought any charcoal. Start with bigger chunks, end with bigger chunks.

Good stuff. Pretty much all I use now.
Get it at Ace on 621 in Prairieville.

Costco occasionally has some killer deals on KJ Big Block.
I'm still using a batch I bought 6 months ago

Rockwood and Wicked are very good and have large pieces. BGE lump is royal oak lump.
My buddy used some call maybe Lazarus and it had a good amount of big chunks as well.
I use Rockwood and Wicked almost exclusively. If you’re in BR, Goodwood carries them.

I was gifted a bag of Louisiana Grills Lump Charcoal and the pieces seem fairly big and consistent. I wasn't expecting much but I was surprised.
This is the only bag of this brand I've ever used, so I'm not sure if that's indicative of normal.

I'm the same way. If I'm using briquettes I will do the snake method in my Weber Kettle. If using Lump, I start a small chimney of briquettes and use that to start the snake, and I always have wood chunks on top of that.

Wicked Good is great and I use it a lot. However the FOGO really had mostly large pieces. I use the WG for typical nights but when I go for the long cooks, I use FOGO.
Casual Creations in BR has the FOGO. Wicked Good was at Goodwood, although the last two times I went by, they were out.

Have been using 20# B&B from Academy/HEB for years. Good lumpage. No complaints.
