I got 4 boxes and started sorting out the big chunks. Great for long cooks.

I used to buy Royal Oak but have started buying Rockwood at Stine and really like it. When I lived in BR, the Ace Hardware on millerville carried Wicked Good. Unsure if they still do.

Here's a website that has tons of lump charcoal reviews. Not all Royal Oak lump is equal:

Royal Oak/BGE are probably the best I've used.

I've been using mostly B&B the last 5 years or so and no big complaints.

Heck, no big complaints about any. Publix brand burned a little different.

Just need to let it burn clean before introducing meat.

BOGO is worth the higher price. Lasts a long time.

Also for Texas baws, HEB/Central Market brand is great. Smaller pieces, but they last a while.

If I go with lump, I use Fogo hardwood charcoal.

Typically though, I use Royal Oak briquettes. It has very good high temps and consistently burns longer than any other brand Ive tried. They seem to light quicker in my chimney as well, but I have never put a stopwatch to it. I feel like it's one of the few briquettes that will not impart a chemical flavor to the food, either.

Well, shite. I e been using Kingsford Professional in my kettle. My wife just got me one of those huge arse bags of Cowboy lump at Costco. I have not opened it yet. Thanks to Costco's return policy, I may be taking this back.

Cowboy Brand - Small chunks, dirty, and plenty of sparks. Not to mention, you do get the added benefit of burning limestone, buckles, and tie down straps if you don't sift through the bag before dumping in your pit

I bought a big arse bag from Costco. Haven't come across anything besides nice lump pieces

When I first got a Kamado Joe, I used Fogo. Now I use Royal Oak.

Need to try the Kamado Joe stuff

Nothing comes close to it, compared to the others i've tried. If anything, some of the chunks are too big.

Exactly this. There is a dealer very near to me, and KJ is mostly all I use now.

Thanks to this board, I have avoided Cowboy lump and others when I was running low, and the better options were not available or convenient.

Try Fire King if you can find it.

Goodwood Hardware carries Rockwood, Wicked and Blues Hog all the time. I think Blues Hog is pretty good as well.

I found buckshot in Cowboy before

I use BGE. According to the guy at the BGE store/hq, BGE sources it’s lump from Royal Oak and get priority selection. My last few bags from BGE have been disappointing so maybe I’ll look for some Big Block.

30# bag of Royal Oak for $16.98 at Walmart is the best deal in the whole store and I only have to walk in and out of the outdoor section.

Someone mentioned Cowboy lump charcoal having a bunch of broken pieces and sticks, etc. That was my experience as well. I didn't not feel it was a good product.

I’ve always used Royal Oak, but really just because that’s what my dad and grandfather always used growing up. Never had a reason to switch. Guess it’s the right call. Most grocery stores in NOLA have that and Kingsford.

Aside - I’m out, and figured I’d check amazon - wtf? A 17lb bag is like $15 at the store, but is $20-40 on Amazon.

I agree with your ranking.
FYI Lowes in Covington had a bunch of JOE BIG BLOCK this morning. I picked up two bags.
