I spoke with a customer in a little town in Iowa today. I always get a kick out of talking to people in those kinds of places. Anyway, I asked this lady what was the one thing I needed to do in Ottumwa, Iowa and she said go to the Canteen and get a 'loose meat sandwich'.

Well, that sent me down a YouTube rabbit hole. Has anyone ever tried this? Most of the recipes seem similar. Basically, a sloppy joe spin. I think I'll try some this week and see how I like it. Anyone have a favorite recipe?

I live in Iowa. They are ok... pretty much a sloppy joe. Here they are actually called maid-rites. I prefer breaded pork tenderloins as our states food. If you are going to Ottumwa, prepare to be unimpressed. That town got destroyed when the Rubbermaid plant left 15 years ago.

One of my favorites to make at home. I just cook ground beef with onions and seasoning. Put on a bun with a slice of American cheese.

I first heard if it from Roseanne and always thought it was a northern mid-west thing. Never really looked into it.

Roseanne! My first thought. Always sounded gross, though.

This looks like the recipe and procedure I'm going with unless anyone has a better recommendation.

Pretty sure M-Dawg (RIP in peace) made a loose meat sandwich thread back in the day. And if he did, I'm sure Rohan2Reed shredded him for it...

Found it. It was Chinese loose meat sandwich, and R2R didn't knock it. But you did

It was a compliment!

I like the idea of chow mein burgers. I wish the pics still loaded.

I hate sloppy joes, I just do not like the sauce at all.

You're in luck! A loose meat sandwich has no sauce.

Yep, I like the loose meat because I don’t like sloppy joes. When we have sloppy joes for dinner, I always cook a small bit of ground beef as loose meat for myself. That’s the only time I make it.

Yep had it several times in OK and Kansas. It is a sloppy joe without tomato sauce. Make sure you get a napkin with it. I was driving down the road to OK and looked down and half the loose meat was sitting in my lap.

It hasn't happened to my knowledge. I have no idea why he quit posting, but I don't believe he passed away. Maybe Mr. Balls knows something else, though.

I assume MDawg is alive and well Gris. I was just goofing around since he hasn't posted in a while. He has been known to disappear for long stretches before, if memory serves..

Your memory is serving you. This seems to be the longest stretch, though.
