Anyone have a good recipe for a large batch of old fashioneds for a party?

Would like to use around 1 handle of bourbon per batch.

Do Old Fashioneds work well in large batches? Doesn’t sound too appealing.

I would not do this.

I would, however, buy a couple bottles of Rock and Rye from Slow and Low.

When I batch drinks I find it's necessary to add water to the cocktail to pre-dilute it, since it's typically not being stirred.

I also find it better to add the bitters to the glass. Their flavors get lost or muddled when pre-batching.

If I we're batching one handle here's what I'd do.

Mix
1.75ml Rye Whiskey
12-16floz 1:1 simple syrup
6-8floz water
And refrigerate over night in an airtight container.

If not adding bitters to the glass,

Just before serving, add
1-2tsp Angostura bitters
1-2tsp Regans' Orange bitters
And stir. Taste and adjust. This is also when you can adjust the dilution and sweetness.

Bring 20-25 large ice cube blocks, 30 orange peels, and a small jar of Luxardo Maraschino cherries for garnish.

Yes. Why would they not? It's literally a mixture of sugar, bitters and whiskey. There's this thing called ratios, and it works in all kinds of scenarios.

Look into buying some of the premade bottles. Might run close to the same cost and guaranteed good mix.

If possible, I would have whiskey on the table as well, for me any of the premade mixes are too sweet, but an extra shot of whiskey can usually make it better on the ratio.

Just have a little station where people can make their own. It’s not a great drink to pre make

I had an old fashioned themed birthday and just had all the ingredients out and a few recipe variations printed available. Guests could make their own as they saw fit. I personally like that better than a big batch. But I'm sure you wouldn't have an issue premixing the whiskey and bitters if you wanted.

Yeah it does if you do it right.

My friend's grandfather had a recipe. He would never share it with us. He told us to figure it out on our own. We had a lot of fun trying. We would submit out latest recipe to him. He gave it to my buddy on his death bed. We learned the fun was in the trying.

Just get a couple half gallons of Makers Mark and be done with it. Put some glasses out, open bottles up, and whatever happens, happens

Still salty that I didn't praise John Mayer, I see. You're going full Lesther; never go full Lesther.

Get some Proof syrup and use that if you are unsure. Honestly, its pretty decent for a quick Old Fashioned. Being a drink snob I was kind of shocked how much I liked it.

I've used this recipe for small batch old fashioned aged in an unused small aging whiskey barrel. It was great for a party, mid week drink. Cocktail Dudes Barrel Old Fashioned
