Houston > Lafayette as well

Of course 90 percent of people on this site are from or live/have lived in south Louisiana so you'll never hear any of them agree. But if you take the entire scope of the restaurant scene (variety and fine dining both being important measuring sticks) Houston is by far a better food city. And I realize it's far far larger, but even from a per capita standpoint I would be willing to bet Houston beats out its neighbor to the east.

Lafayette clearly does cajun food better (probably seafood too - but they seem to only fry it ), but that's probably about it. Break it down:

steak: Houston
Mexican: Houston
Indian: Houston
Thai: Houston
burgers: Houston

I can go on..

What are lafayettes top 10?
. Regardless of how br vs laffy top tens compare, the thing is i dont eat at top ten restaraunts everyday. I do however eat at $10 or less lunch spots 3-4 days a week. This is one example of where lafayette excells and what br lacks.

Ive been in br 8 years and just moved to lafayette. I couldnt be happier with what it offers. Im not a baller like some of you though so a few nice places and a bunch of great but not so polished spots works for me. (Lebouf's )

Boudin and cracklin lunches around every corner is a plus.

“From a tourism standpoint, everyone in Louisiana is really in it together. What’s good for Lafayette is good for New Orleans and vice versa.” -Kelly Schulz, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau

I think her point is worth noting amid our in-state rivalries.

(I spoke with tourism officials from a handful of the losing cities today for an article in tomorrow's edition of The Daily Advertiser / TheAdvertiser.com.)

Supported by?

How many times have you had a perfect martini and some crab and corn gnocchi at Stroube's since Varnadoe came in? How about stuffed squab at Maison Lacour? Gino's on a Friday night with a good pianist? Many experiences with the chargrilled oysters and redfish at Mansur's? Which Indian restaurants in Lafayette compare to Bay Leaf? Which Lafayette food trucks stack up to the burgers at Curbside or the incredible french onion soup or fresh pastas at Ignatius Reilly's? Where in Lafayette is there cheap, quality Thai like at Rama? Which taquerías in Lafayette compare to those throughout Baton Rouge? Maybe something simple like the fried chicken at Delpit's? Maybe Chelsea's when a good band is playing?

Lafayette does some things really, really well. I like the city a lot. That doesn't mean that there is some gulf between the restaurants. Lafayette, I would argue, likely has better food served in homes throughout the area than Baton Rouge. I'm from neither city, but I do love all of South Louisiana. I think we're fortunate to have it all here.

. The same claims could be made about restaraunts in lafayette with unique dishes and atmosphere

. I could take or leave indian or thai and i only visit food trucks at parties/events which lafayette does the same but old school: booths.

. I dont know anyhing about laffys taquerias but from what ive visitted in br i thought they were overrated (to be fair i only vissitted a couple from f&db recs)

. Also plate lunches. Br has shite as far as lunch food goes. It has options but they're far and few. Working construction i move around alot and in laffy tjere is always something around the corner with good food at a fair price and i have yet to eat anything fried.

I do miss Chelsea's, Stroubes, and a few other places but i much prefer lafayette

Sure they can, but to act like Lafayette leads baton rouge in those areas and that it's no contest is laughable. All of those restaurants have a lot more than those unique dishes. It was an illustration that he just made a blanket assertion without really knowing what he was talking about.

Lafayette does plate lunches really well. Better than Baton Rouge, for sure. Because one doesn't eat Indian, Thai, or food trucks doesn't mean they can be just cast aside. Variety is really important in judging a city's overall restaurant scene.

I'm working around Lake Chuck for a year, and I'd kill to be living in either Baton Rouge or Lafayette right now.

Not saying LC is better, I lived in BR for 4 years and I miss it terribly, but LC has some solid plate lunch spots and other places with good lunch specials

When is your night at Boucherie? The best value/food in perhaps the country. Thought it might be tonight.

True. Unfortunately while I'm living around LC, my work has me down in Cameron during the day.
