to say that selling it lower is illegal, when no information has been provided to sustain that claim, is quite another. in fact, it is quite irresponsible (at this time) as a retail operator

I used to work for a distributor, there is a minimum stores can sell for. I don't know the exact law code in the book, but it is definitely true. Get off the man's nuts.

The only thing I found in the book was that it's illegal to sell at a loss. There was no specific minimum mark up. There was a specific 6% minimum markup on tobacco though.

Granted I could be wrong as I didn't read every word on each of the 399 pages, but it would seem strange to me if they had a law saying you had to sell it for at least x amount above retail and also have a law saying you can't see it at a loss. The one that would say you can't sell it less than x amount mark up automatically prohibits selling at a loss because that wouldn't be a markup at all.

I saw a book once with wholesale cost, distributor cost, and minimum retail sale price for every single sku we had. I don't remember if it is 6% or not, but I think that was right.

But from brewer to customer, the markup is a lot smaller than you would think. It's amazing anyone makes money off of selling beer (besides the brewer).

But is that a legal minimum or a producer/distributor desired MSRP? We have brand standards and desired retails that we relay to retailers when bringing in new products, but there's nothing in Texas law prohibiting them from selling it lower. It's just kinda frowned upon.

Beer is more volume than wine or liquor though. $20 can get you a 24 pack of domestic, a nice bottle of wine, or a decent bottle of spirits.

Take the super bowl for instance where about 1/5 of alcohol drinkers surveyed buy wine. Beer is the number one beverage drank during the super bowl, even above soda, so we can probably say 3/5 drink beer and another 1/5 drink liquor. That's a ton of volume. Alcohol increases basket size and register rings so grocery stores pack the beer out because 3/5 people are going to buy it.

They'll make their margins on produce, deli, and meat where you get 30%+ up into the 40%s with deli. Liquor stores make their margins on the liquor and have beer to increase register rings.

We need a good GOAT in the Machine thread.

One where everyone reminisces on how awesome Batch 4 was, complaining that Andrew mailed it in Batches 13 thru 27, a picture of someone loading 12 cases into their vehicle, someone else pissed because they didn’t get any, and the dude in this thread who works at this family store having a raffle.

I will try to help get us back on track:

I scored two six packs of Jucifer last night from NOLA Mid City Rouses. There were 2 cases left. Took me a little while to find the stack. But I have not tasted it yet.

On second thought, that's almost as boring as arguing about alcohol regulations.

So are you saying your buddy doesn't know the beer laws and that statement is incorrect?

You should honestly just give up on here. You're hurting the business, I'm assuming your dad/grandfather started, more than you're helping it.

State minimum. Basically designed so stores like Walmart don’t sell a case of bud light for $5 for the reasons you described in the rest of your post.

Coming off the biggest sales year in the 76 year history of the store overall with beer being the top department as far as growth, which is my soul responsibility, I'm just going to have to disagree with you

We appreciate all the customers we have and are continuing to grow on a daily basis. The fact that I am not "liked" by some posters on an anonymous message board doesn't define me as a person or us as a business.

That would be loss leading though which is specifically stated in the law, not selling at a minimum markup.

you're doing a damn good job of proving all those posters right...

no one gives a shite about your sales numbers. you come off as a pretty unlikable person and some people have stopped shopping at your family store because of it. hard to argue with that...

I appreciate the Calandros presence on the board. Don’t worry about the flack you get from a few on here.

Nailed it.... and I really like calandros as a store. I know the prices are a little higher but I also know they will have just about any beer I want so I didn’t mind paying a little extra for convenience. After the OB rant of FB I don’t really plan on going any there anymore.

Are you drinking it straight out of the can? There’s your problem

Edit: go ahead and downvote but go look at the FBD threads. Not a single one will be drinking out of the can. It makes a differenc

Yeah well the reason I like cans is because I can drink them on my tractor , lawn mower and while I’m trolling around the pond, working in the garden etc ..

I’m not pouring it I to a teku unless I’m sitting on the porch, deck or balcony.

If I HAVE to pour it out of the can I’ll just buy another beer that I don’t have to.

I’m not saying cans are bad. I’m saying drinking it straight out of the can when it’s meant to be poured into a glass will make your experience worse. You either deal with that or go grab a case of bud lights, which taste like shite either way
