about the average price for these kinds of drinks at bars & restaurants in Baton Rouge? Have I been living under a rock, or does that just seem ridiculously high?

It really depends on the bar or restaurant. They're more in bigger cities.

I've routinely paid 8-10. So 6 bucks is prety cheap in that regard.

$5-$7 is the norm for JD in BR.

I understand that these places need to cover their operating expenses and make some money, but it seems at $6 bucks a pop for a small drink they'd be making mucho $$$ off a bottle of whiskey...Maybe I'm missing something.
And I'm aware that there are places that charge more. Bigger cities, higher end places & such.

depends on where you go.. smaller bars are around 5-6$.. but mid city they are at least 8$ and up.. Dont even try to buy one in NOLA, 15$

It's not overpriced if you paid for it.
That's low/avg

1 liquor bottle should net you 17 drinks in a 1.5 oz pour.
17 drinks * $6 =$102
So about $80 Gross profit.
Yeah...bars do well on liquor.
ETA: But, I don't order drinks at bars that I know measure shots and are stingy. I consider them "overpriced".

That's about the price of a Cane's box. Sounds reasonable to me.

Liquor prices have risen drammitcally in the past few years, but interestingly the cost of the booze to the restaurant stays relatively the same. This is mostly due to an influx of competition from new boozes.

Jack and cokes at New Orleans bars are $15? link me to some proof please.

$15 is Vegas prices. Never in NOLA, unless you're drinking Red Bull and Vodka and the bartenders are fricking with you.

No shite. I'm used to paying $7-10. Maybe $12 if I'm at a high end restaurant.

Well a coke is going to cost $2 at most places so adding a premium liquor for only $4 seems sensible.

You will drive yourself nuts worrying about what a place is making off of drinks/food. Just know the game and accept the terms if you want to play it.

Hell, I paid $39 for a steak last night that I know couldn't have cost the restaurant more than $10.

But in BR, I usually have certain drinks that I get at certain places due to value. I usually know what my first 2 or 3 drinks are going to be at any given bar. After that, it's

After years of managing food costs/bar costs at several places, and eventually bookkeeping and doing audit work for restaurants I have a pretty accurate assessment of costs in relation to my perceived value. And the cheap arse in me likes to dictate my spending. I don't think Mrs. Afro even realizes they put prices on a menu 'cause she couldn't tell you what anything costs. Must be nice.

Well, that's not always true. I've found places in every major city, including Manhattan, where you can find reasonably priced drinks. It's the "see and be seen" and high end places that will bend you over the bar stool in big cities.
