Is AP full of it or has the shutdown slowed breweries in LA and around the US?

AP, Urban South and others in Louisiana are complaining because the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau is offline due to the shutdown their business can not fully operate.

You Htown baws might have to wait for dat Parish juice.

“LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Louisiana breweries might have fewer seasonal offerings this spring because of the partial shutdown of the federal government.

The agency responsible for approving licenses for new breweries and new labels for beer distributed out of state — the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau — is among those with shuttered operations amid the impasse in Washington over funding for a U.S.-Mexico border wall.”

A couple in Alabama have said it has hampered them as well, so there's likely some truth to it.

If they have to get a new label approved, and the office that approves those labels are shut down, I would think that would hamper things, no?

Maybe. Are LA breweries pumping out that many new labels and as a business owner why would you not try to stay ahead of this if you were paying attention to the news.

One Alabama brewer said they get their aluminum cans from a Mexican supplier, and the shutdown has caused their deliveries to be tied up in customs longer than normal.

Not sure how it affects in state sales. I imagine this will slow down parish in Houston though like OP said, although I thought TABC was in charge of that.

I saw another article yesterday that quoted Karlos from Bayou Teche that the shutdown is preventing a new brewery in BR from getting their licensing.

The fact that this bureau exists should piss people off, not the shutdown.

My understanding is that this label approval issue only matters if you have intentions to distribute the beer out of state. If you’re only selling it locally you can get approval at the state level, which is still happening.

That’s what I’ve been told about how it works in Mass, and the article suggests the same is true for LA.

Seems to me the actual issue is having to have a government bureaucrat approve your label in the first place.

No big deal. Andrew and a couple Fort Bend County governments are still in negotiations. He was initially looking at Stafford since there’s no city property taxes, but Sugar Land stepped up and offered 10 Years property tax-free if he locates operations at the old sugar mill.

It’ll be a nice place for parents to hang out while their kids are at the museum.

Just about everyone who has to deal with the federal government is starting to feel the effects. Oil & gas companies operating in Permian New Mexico are having to adjust schedules, and they have lobbyists in DC monitoring the situation.

Fortunately, unlike the Obama Administration in 2013, the Trump Administration rightfully sees value in trying to keep oil rigs running, so some folks have been classified as necessary in order to process drill permits. However, it’s still certainly less efficient on project approvals than when everyone is working.

Yes and no. By and large...not really. It’ll slow down a special release/seasonal etc, but not the already approved labels.

It’s not a big deal. And if you go under based on not getting your label approved...your model was out of whack.

It is my understanding that they can go at the State level but it has more fees and red tape so many do not want to do that. Obviously paying more hurts the profit margin but apparently, it can be done, also issue that the state can and has changed their mind about things they've approved before.

Shouldn't affect in-state sales at all.

It also won't affect already established labels, so Parish beers that have already been distributed out of state won't be affected. Those labels have already been approved.

It's so dumb that this is even an issue in the first place though.

Federal government should have no say in beer labels or distribution
