Welcome to the world of rum.

First, I and many other rum drinkers have a preference for "non-dosed" rums. It is common practice in the rum industry to add sugar and coloring to the distillate in order to achieve a consistent flavor profile. Some of these rums taste great, like Diplomatico or El Dorado. The problem here is that it makes it much harder to determine what is great distilling/aging and what is just added sugar.

I personally stick mostly to rum from countries that make it illegal to add sugar to the product, like Jamaica, Martinique, and Barbados. Nothing wrong with sugared rums, it's just not where I perceive the best value.

If you want to try some non-dosed rums that are of excellent quality, let me suggest a few:

Appleton 8, 12, 15, 21
The Real McCoy 5, 12
Doorly's 12
Smith and Cross
Hampden Estate 5, 8
Foursquare (anything but the spiced rum)
Probitas
Plantation OFTD
Barbancourt White, 5, 8, 15
JM Rhum (any bottling)

As far as dosed rums go, I really like El Dorado 12 and 15. Solid Guyana Demerara rum and they have recently dialed back the sugar a lot on the 12.

There are a few operations making Louisiana rum, but none of it really compares to the quality of the good Caribbean producers. I prefer rums that are mostly or all pot-still, which takes longer to make, is more inefficient, and more expensive than column still rum.

Lots of good info there and posters before.
I do have a total wine by me, next time I go I’ll hit up a few bottles I can find from this thread.

It's not a high end one like some of the other suggestions, but Bumbu is pretty tasty straight up and won't break the bank.

I mean, if Lil Wayne drinks it...

I really enjoy those. All the ones that weren't backsweetend weren't nearly as good to me.

My go to old fashioned right now is doing a rum old fashioned with equal parts Plantation Pineapple and Plantation OFTD. It is wonderful.

All 3 heavily dosed with sugar syrup and use false age statements.

I'm a big fan of the Old New Orleans 1718 Rum. Also, their cajun spice rum has vanilla, ginger, and cayenne - which give it a great smooth heat. Their price point is good, but a recent fire in the distillery may cause a scarcity.

I think they are done. None of their products are available anywhere that I can tell. The cayenne spiced rum was Gris Gris. It was actually a rum-based liqueur. Since it’s not available, I’ve been experimenting trying to come up with a homemade substitute. Haven’t quite got it yet, but it’s all been drinkable.

Just venturing into the world of rum. Bought some Doorly's 12 at total wine today. I like it. If you have other suggestions, let me know

Gris gris was an individually packaged product made with their spiced rum, lime juice, and ginger beer. I make pitchers of it at home on hot days, and its wonderful!
