I want an honest opinion of the F&D Board on the Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood, Texas

This past weekend I was in Hill Country and we made the trip to the Salt Lick in between wine tastings at the many wineries in the area.

I'm going to start off by saying the food was not bad and the service was not bad, hell I really like the atmosphere, but without a doubt this restaurant is the most overrated place I've ever been to. the Salt Lick regularly sits atop or near the top of lists of great BBQ joints in Texas and the nation.

So what does the food and drink board honestly think about this place as it ranks among BBQ restaurants?

I've been to the Driftwood location twice. I like it. If I remember correctly, it's BYOB and cash only (ATM available).

I really like their sauce, so much in fact, I buy it at my local grocer.

Their chicken is really good along with their brisket and beef ribs. It's not the best by any stretch of the imagination. I prefer Lockhart's in Dallas and Smitty's (best brisket I have ever eaten) in Lockhart, TX. Black's (Lockhart and Austin locations) is good as well, but you have to catch them at the right time to ensure their beef ribs haven't gone "dry."

Hard 8 in Dallas gets honorable mention.

It's a cool place for sure, but it's pretty meh.

Their sauce is decent, their rub is interesting. It's got some heat to it.

Great atmosphere and average BBQ. I've had it where they are doing it well, but the majority of the time is average.

Luling, TX (Black's, City Market, Kreuz -- it doesn't really matter) is the mecca of BBQ.

I still need to try that next time I'm in town. I always opt for Pecan Lodge.

Must've not been to Franklin's BBQ

Slipped my mind. Really don't know how I forgot this place.

Right up there in the running, in my mind, for best brisket. A close second to Smitty's.

two of those places are in Lockhart.

Salt Lick food is above average for bbq, but not as good as some of the others in the area (there are a lot of options)
but it is a good sit down, more traditional style restaurant. the open pit doesn't make as good of a brisket imo.

The most overrated, time wasting dining experience that I've ever had.

Long drive from Austin to stand in the cold for two hours, listening to some a-hole bang on a guitar. We finally get seated and the food is as boring as you could imagine. I was so fricking pissed at my friend who insisted that you had to leave Austin and drive out to this place for good barbecue.

Never again.

Ehhhhh...the thing is, Salt Lick is usually 4th or 5th on most lists when people say where to go in Central Texas for BBQ. But that's today. 10 years ago, it was a lot closer to #1, and rightfully so. Austin did not have Franklin, La BBQ, John Mueller, Stile's Switch, Mickelthwaite, etc.

If I'm out in that area, I'll stop at Salt Lick. I'm a brisket man, and their brisket is just average, maybe below, but their ribs are VERY good and their sides are awesome. You can also do family style there and eat as much as you want. The atmosphere is great as well.

I haven't been there in about 5 or 6 years probably, which is right around the time Austin's BBQ scene exploded. There's no reason to go to Driftwood at this point if I just want good BBQ.

Salt Lick is above average barbecue with a really cool atmosphere. With that said, I really enjoy going when I am in the area.

Best pecan pie I've ever had. The BBQ was better than anything I can get in Lake Charles, but much better options in the greater Austin area.

ETA: The only time I've eaten there was for a rehearsal dinner. it was fricking awesome for that.

This is pretty spot on. The overall experience is what makes it worth going. It's solid bbq and an iconic institution. If you're expecting to be blown away then you'll be disappointed, as with just about any place.

Salt Lick is family style so they keep bringing it until you say uncle- then they bring you more to take home with you. I had never heard the term meat sweats before going there but I now know exactly what the term means. The ride home is the worst part about a visit to Salt Lick.

When the main selling point of a place is the atmosphere, I'm out.

Hard 8 isn't in the same league as Pecan Lodge.

I enjoyed Salt Lick the one time I've gone. It wasn't the best BBQ I've had but it wasn't horrible.

Hard 8 can't even smell PL or Lockhart for that matter

As far as Dallas Q:

PL >>> Lockhart >>>>> H8

The BBQ snobs on the board will say it's meh because it's such a popular place. It's really good BBQ in a great atmosphere. Definitely worth the experience. Get the burnt ends.
