I have a friend who has a whole durian and I'm going to get to try the infamous fruit in all its glory. Is it as bad as its reputation and what other infamous foods have you guys tried?

I wouldn't say that I've tried anything quite that bad but I had "bitter melon" at an Asian fusion restaurant once (I say that, they just couldn't figure out what country's cuisine they wanted to represent) and I'll have to say I thought it was pretty disgusting.

I tried it at an Asian farmers market once. Not sure if it was ripe or not, but the guy assured me this was how it was supposed to be. They texture was worse than the taste. IMO, Taste > Smell = Texture. The smell was overwhelming (image fermented body odor if you can ) but the texture was a creaminess I never wish to experience again. Needless to say, I didn’t buy one.

Good luck, and don’t bring any home with you

I've heard it described as the most disgusting thing they've smelled/eaten.

So that's something.

But hey, next up, you can try some Surströmming or Hákarl.

Bitter melon is an acquired taste. It goes from awful to tolerable after just a couple of meals. My wife is Chinese and she grows bitter melon in our garden. We are looking forward to fresh bitter melon later this week.

I've eaten it in Singapore. It smelled like turpentine when they cut it. It tasted like it smelled. It wasn't bad but not something I'd buy.

I ate a piece and thought is was very good. My buddy even got me a bag of durian candy from Asia and I ate them all, and I don't eat candy.

I like both of those things!

I'll be sure to report back once the deed is done.

Zimmern absolutely hates it. I'd try it though.

A rare thing for him. I recall Bourdain loved it

Icelandic Hákarl (Fermented Shark).

This is what death and eternal hell tastes like.

I wish Travel Channel would replay more old Bourdain shows than ghost show garbage. Bourdain's trip to Iceland was one of the funniest

Zimmern didn't like the shark either. Also the rotted salmon heads from Alaska and Lutefisk from Minnesota.

What was the stuff in the bulging cans that hissed and sprayed fish juice everywhere when opened?

I don't know if I could try that.

I had it in Thailand. The initial taste and texture is like a thick vanilla custard. Actually pretty good. The after taste is what will get you. Too strong for me, but I could definitely see how it could be an acquired taste.

I agree. It wasn't absolutely horrible, IMO, but I'm not going out of my way to eat it again either. It tasted kind of like a fermented cantaloupe with a custardy texture to me.

The smell is worse than the taste IMO. And neither are that bad... just kinda strong. I think what throws westerners off is it starts to smell/taste rotten, but the smell/taste finishes clean. Kind of like the different between good fishy and bad fishy.

Idk, hope you enjoy. The grossest part to me is the way it looks.... raw chicken
