Was only saying that I expect people to say how the pies have changed and they aren't as good as they once were. Mainly because people are blinded by how good they were.

As a fat guy doing manual labor I have probably eaten more than the average.
And honestly, the Haydels pies I have had are fresher and a better product. However, they aren't Hubigs. Hubig's isn't about high quality or freshness. They are about sustenance for less than a buck and getting the sugar high.

Remember going fishing with my dad and doing this. It was as important as getting bait and gas. To me anyway!
Did the same with my sons until the fire.

Agreed that Stage Planks were a staple growing up.
They still sell them at a small store where I live.
I cant think of the brand they are but they are not the Stage Planks of days gone by, by any means.

I was around the Arkansas/Missouri border on I-55 years ago, and there were a few gas stations that advertised hand pies. I stopped at one. It was like a gas station that has fried chicken or boudin next to the counter, but it was hand pies that they made in store. They were twice the size of Hubigs and had many flavors like Hubigs. They were stacked behind the glass counter like in a donut shop and when you ordered, they put them in a small white paper bag. They had a homemade taste and were good, a fun thing to buy on a road trip. I never knew that was a thing in that area.

Nonna's are good but definitely no Hubig. Patiently waiting for a lemon after 15 sec in microwave with french market coffee!

They stopped making the small, baked pies after Katrina. I THINK they still made the full sized baked pies after, but don't hold me to it. So almost everyone lamenting and anticipating are pining for the fried pies.
Nonna Randazzo's makes fried pies, but the crust isn't great, and there's less filling.
Coffee& in Marrero does a decent fried pie, but, again, the consistency of the crust is a bit softer than Hubig's. It's the Hubig's crust that was just right.
