This is all untrue. For several reasons. The easiest being that there isn't just a "whatever they use in meth labs" that causes them to explode. explosions happen in meth labs due to improper handling of flammable solvents, often in less than ideally ventilated places. They don't happen bc someone uses some mystery ingredient to cook meth, and they definitely can't stuff this mystery ingredient into a propane tank.

When you replace the tank it's less than half the volume of the original tank?

It's about 15.8 lbs less, the difference being the weight of the propane that was used.

Good advice would be to have a second full one as backup all the time. This way you can use up the entire tank without wasting any and simply swap it out when the fire cedes. Then you can simply fill or exchange the other one at your convenience.

This is what I do. When I know I'm getting low I make sure to check the grill often so I know when I run out.

Spot on Spock! Weighing is your best option. Subtract the weight from 32.8 and divide by 3 to figure out lbs of propane per crawfish sack. Then see if you have enough left for 2 more sacks. My guess is NO.

That being said. My Dad had a 12 gallon and a 5 for backup. If I didn't have a natural gas burner thats the route I would go.
This I have one trade in tank I keep because you can trade in anywhere. But I usually get my other tanks filled at the Icehouse on Williams. I don't get why it costs so much more to trade out.
like3-5x the cost.
I really really need to run a natural gas line out by the boil area.

Keep your own tank, and find a place that will only charge you for what they put in it to fill it up. I always got mine filled at the Ace hardware on Millerville before i moved from Baton Rouge.
The SHORT answer to your question is that you will run out of propane if you don't get it filled.
Someone made that up and told you that.

Oh, I do keep a second tank on hand. Nothing sucks worse than running out and having to make a trip to the store. The scale and record-keeping is just for my own amusement.

Maybe i should clarify ... when i said "they had a case" ... i didn't mean that "i heard about it", or "somebody i know read it in the advocate", or "my maw maw saw it on WAFB."
Without disclosing too much about my job, I worked for the 19th Judicial District Court until i moved from Baton Rouge to Atlanta. I read the affidavit of probable cause and also spoke to the arresting officers about this case.
So when i said "they had a case in Baton Rouge" . it wasn;t something i heard, something someone made up and told me, or an urban myth. It was a case that i was actually involved with.

$18.99 to swap my tank out 4 blocks down the street at Wallgreens or $17 to drive across town to ACE on highland and have them fill it.
