How to tell when a propane tank is empty?

I'm doing a boil tomorrow and I have one of those Amerigas propane tanks. I've used it for two separate boils (3 sacks total) and was trying to figure out if I have enough to boil two sacks. It lights, and I shook it up and could hear just a little bit of fluid sloshing around. I don't have a lot of experience with these things and I don't see a gauge or anything on it. What do yall think?

is it heavy?
if it is, then its full.
if it's light then its empty

Go swap it. After two boils you will run out right in the middle of the next one.

You can buy a magnetic gage at any hardware store that will tell you how much is in it.

Shake it too, if you hear anything moving around, then you still got some.

Pour hot water down the side of the tank. Run your hand down the side starting at the top. Where the tank gets cold is the level of the tank.

The standard tanks are 19 lb when empty, weigh it.

Them trade in are the biggest fricking rip offs... buy 2 tanks and have Harry down at Strickland propane fill it when it gets light. They only charge you for what you put in it.
That being said. My Dad had a 12 gallon and a 5 for backup. If I didn't have a natural gas burner thats the route I would go.

A trade out at Academy is only $15. It is too cheap and easy to swap out a bottle even when it is a quarter full.

I have natural gas as well but I also have about 50 hundred pound tanks so I don't worry too much about swapping.

These are expensive as hell but are pretty cool. Costco will now fill a 20lb tank for $9.50

I don't use the swap out tanks. They can be dangerous. Had a case in Baton Rouge where some guys got arrested after their tank exploded while in the back of their pickup going down I-12 ... usually a sign of a mobile meth lab.
After further investigation, it was revealed that none of the other components of a methlab were present, and the tank was actually in the back of the truck with a grill ... the guys had picked up a swap out tank, and some previous douche bag had put something OTHER than propane in it (whatever they use in meth labs) and just swapped it out when he wasn't making meth and just wanted to grill or boil.
Keep your own tank, and find a place that will only charge you for what they put in it to fill it up. I always got mine filled at the Ace hardware on Millerville before i moved from Baton Rouge.
The SHORT answer to your question is that you will run out of propane if you don't get it filled.

I've been keeping a record in Excel since 2009. My average new Amerigas tank from Albertsons is 32.8 lbs +/- .26. The average when replaced is 17.0 lbs +/- .38. The sample size is 11.
