Cooking for 40 people. How many pork butts should I smoke to have enough food but not too much?

1/2 pound per person for large servings.

You need 20 pounds of cooked meat.

Butts are usually around 8 pounds. I’m guessing you can end up with 5 pounds of meat. That would mean 4 butts will give you 20 pounds of cooked meat.

3 or 4, depending on weight and if other food is being served. 3/4 pound per person is plenty, on average.

Agree with Cosmo.

Pork butts are usually around 10 lbs each. My guess is they only yield about 50-60%. IOW, a 10 lb butt will only give you 5-6 lbs of pulled pork.

Assuming all 40 people eat 0.7 lbs, you would need (40 × 0.7 =) 28 lbs of pulled pork. And since they only yield at about a 50% rate, you would need to buy (28/.5 =) 56 lbs.

May want to consider if people are just gonna be hanging around for hours some will go back for thirds.

If you wanna add some extra throw a bag of wings on your smoker and/or some sausage. If I'm smoking pork, I throw on beef sausage and vice-versa.

Hope it all goes well.

I was gonna say 5, 8 people per butt, but you should throw an extra on for good measures. It will probably be too much but more is better, atleast that’s what she says

If you’re making sandwiches and have sides, 3-4 would be enough probably… I did 2 for around 25-30 people and there was left overs

Butts yield 60-70%.

Determine your portion size and do the maph.

#8 butt gives #5-6 yield.

Average portion size 6-8oz

10-12 portions per butt.

Caveat: I've been drinking.

My maph is most likely incorrect.

Depends on what else you have but I would say 2-4 butts.

Feels like a word problem.

My MIL cooks a whole pork butt and it feeds 20 people at Sunday lunch. So I would cook 3 to be on the safe side.

I love a good potato salad, homemade baked beans and garlic bread with smoked pork.

This is correct. Most cooked meats weigh about 63% of their pre-cooked weight. This fact is one of the pillars of the Jambalay Calculator and one reason it works so well..

Write this down. It will come in very handy.
