Places like Joe's may not be where I want to eat (particularly in a region where fresh seafood is readily available), but who am I to judge where people chose to spend there money?

I went to a Joe's in Chesapeake, VA because it was close to my hotel
I thought the food was ok but nothing compared to the offerings you can get in Louisiana

Always puzzles me.
If you've never eaten there and don't know what it's like, why would it puzzle you?

A lot of people of color go to Joe's, RL and other chains because back when the local places wouldn't serve them, the national chains would.
As explained to me by a local guy who grew up here (BR) during those times.
Joe's Crab Shack has been here a long time, so someone is going there, I went once because an out of towner wanted me to meet them there. I was surprised how terrible the food was, I didn't expect it to be great, but chewy fried catfish is really nasty. And I'll never forget the extremely annoying wait staff, all that shouting, standing on chairs, singing. Just shut up and bring me something edible.

Because it's a chain seafood restaurant and I can only imagine that 90% of the hundred local seafood restaurants would be exponentially better than Red Lobster.
But who knows. Maybe it is better than most local seafood restaurants. I will never know.

Are talking about racial segregation?
Joes Crab Shack was founded in 1991

Thank God the one in Nola got taken out by Katrina. Unfortunately the best view at the lake got taken over by Landry’s which is average.

I should have been clearer. I was referring to the national chains in general who were more accepting of POC than some of the local businesses. My friend said Howard Johnson's in particular was a family favorite, they were one of the first nat'l chains in BR.
He said his mother told them the food in the other restaurants was not clean, that's why they didn't go, she didn't tell them that the restaurants didn't welcome black people. Which was kind of funny to me, my mother used to tell us the same thing, but because we were rather poor and couldn't afford to eat out.

Its proximity to the interstate is what keeps it afloat, I imagine. I'm fairly confident that the majority of its clientele are people just passing through that see a name they know.

the answer is consistency.

I have never been to Joe's Crab Shack, but a friend told me this was the worst place he's ever eaten at.

BR earned that reputation and it was true 20 years ago but not so much anymore.
