If your microwave is a nicer one with a humidity sensor then it works almost perfectly every time.
The microwave is waiting for the bag to burst open and then adds a little time on after that. It fixes the issue with the power levels being slightly different on every machine.
Cheap microwaves just have static timers, so probably explains why some people have varying success with the "popcorn button".
Some "smart" appliances also integrate microphones, but I am not sure about those.

I have no idea. I have a Sharp drawer microwave.

I don't, microwave popcorn is awful, a few kernels always burn and stink up the kitchen. I bought a popcorn popper pot 30 years ago, it's still makes the best.

Press the :30 sec button a few times. Stand close by and wait till I hear very little popcorn still popping and then I open the door
