why are black folks obsessed with pouring orange juice in the boil?

Is that an actual thing? I’ve never heard of anybody using orange juice for a boil.

It really doesn’t make them better. Seasoning, yes. Season the frick out of them but orange juice isn’t necessary

So you don’t use lemons?

Confession: I add lemons and orange juice concentrate. Best crawfish I’ve ever had.

orange juice in the boil

Cutting oranges in half and adding them to the boil isn’t that far off from doing the same with lemons, both are citrus. Never heard of using orange drank, but I’d be hesitant to knock it before trying it, might be a similar taste result at the end.

Looks like he spent more on seasoning/juice/sausage than he did on the crawfish.

I know plenty of folks that put oranges in their boil. I don’t do oranges but I load up on some lemons. Using the juice instead of the fruit isn’t that much different.

As far as I know Tampico doesn't make orange juice. They make citrus punch which is less than 2% orange juice from concentrate. What you're getting is a butt load of flavored high fructose corn syrup.

I found the ingredients here
Ingredients
Water, high fructose corn syrup, less than 2% of orange juice from concentrate, tangerine juice from concentrate, lemon juice from concentrate, ascorbic acid (vitamin c), natural and artificial flavors, potassium sorbate (preservative), edta (to help protect flavor), sucralose, acesulfame potassium, neotame, citric acid, malic acid, potassium citrate, sodium citrate, food starch-modified, yellow 5, yellow 6, corn oil, xanthan gum.

There’s a world of difference between adding a few oranges and lemons to your water and completely skipping the water portion of the crawfish boil and substituting it with orange drank.

A large difference.

I’m from Bossier, I have never in my entire life been to a crawfish boil that did it that way. Never once. I’ve cooked thousands upon thousands of pounds of crawfish both privately and commercially and have never seen anybody ever do that in this area.

Everybody that I know does crawfish the right way. Soaking them in seasoned water.
