Hammond wouldn't be any more lacking in local restaurants than BR, no?
I named most of the ones i could think of off the top of my head..Maybe ten ? maybe...
my "issue" is i consider two or more, a chain..and if the owner and/or their family owns ten other restaurants, thats a chain..
honestly, the biggest issue in the Hammond eater scene is that its simply bland 9/10 places..

tacos and beer
mariners
lees
Thai green leaf
Le Saigon
Tommy’s
portside
cena
la carreta
the district
toula burger
cate st
streetside
dine gnar
b&j’s
Murphy’s
salty joes
yellow bird
you might not like all those or any of those but that’s a you thing. To say Hammond doesn’t have good local non-chain dining is preposterous. There are more places I like in Hammond that are local than there are in Baton Rouge or Covington or Mandeville

Half of those are Ponchatoula and one or two are more than one location..Pretty sure a few are owned by the same family, with locations in other cities too..
maybe the confusion here is that you consider big boxes chains, not places with multiple locations
tacos and beer-this was in my go to list
mariners-not my style and more than one location
lees-fantastic, more than one location
Thai green leaf-underrated and forget to put on my RADAR, thats on me
Le Saigon-see above, hate that they moved and its not walkable any more
Tommy’s-bro
portside-tf is this ?
cena-decent, but why continue to patronize a $200 dinner that has no chef
la carreta-chain..majorly
the district-in hammond ?
toula burger-in hammond ?
cate st-fair pt
streetside-its literally a chain, in one building
dine gnar-hit or miss, reheated sysco food..cant wait for that beer drop tomorrow though, ngl
b&j’s-honestly, i've never braved the crowd to eat here..is this their only location ?
Murphy’s-pretty sure there is more than one of these, and I'm under 65 years old
salty joes-didnt consider this hammond, but yes, its decent
yellow bird-underrated, but its so hard to figure out when they are open
again, not a dig at you or what you like, but to think that Hammond is overflowing with options that "are not chains" is debatable

Holy sh*t a $32 spicy tuna roll

$25 for 4 soup dumplings…because it has wagu beef inside. Literally no one gives a shite. If you put pork and shrimp in there it’d be better, and cost $7.50.

Add Chili’s to the list.

I’m staunchly anti-chain (for the most part. Not all chains are created equal) but maybe once a year I’ll frick with a Chili’s.

We went a couple months ago for the first time in many years and had zero complaints. Been back 2 times since with same result.
I don’t think we’re overly pro or anti anything as long as it’s good, but tend toward more local vs chain.

I will frick up a bowl of that angus black pepper steak (they re-name the dish every month it seems like) any day.

Chili's is dead to me once they stopped using skirt steak for their fajitas.
Their marg of the month for $6 isn't bad, though.

Local places are great…until they open restaurants they have no business opening and charge prices like they are experts. Look at this fricking ‘sushi’ menu.
What is that shite?
Their pricing looks like nothing but a giant freaking troll.

IDK. They’ve been building this beautiful building forever in BSL and billed it as a sushi joint…open it with this menu.

As a small business owner not in the restaurant industry that contstantly battles against corporate companies on a daily basis....frick you.

A self-proclaimed "sushi" restaurant with the only sushi being 7 rather lame mundane sounding rolls, all priced 2-3 times what you would reasonably expect to see pretty much anywhere else of any stature.

I dont care who owns a place and i dont give a crap about presenting an image. I will pay and tip what a meal and service give and so prefer localy owned places. But kudos to chains like Olive Garden, Texas Roadhouse, Carrabas, wafflehouse who dont rip you off. They give you good food, value and service. That is why they last more than 10 years.
