in the state. Period.
The Chicken & Sausage could come from a Ville Platte kitchen. Excellent consistency, good sausage, always hot.
I haven't found a better one.
Got any challengers?

It has probably been about ten years since I lived in Lafayette but I agree. It is some of the best gumbo from a restaurant that I have ever had.

I haven't tried the one you're referring to but one of my favorites is at atchafalaya restaurant in NOLA.
And I don't generally have much respect for gumbo out of NOLA.

What decent NO restaurant serves a bad version of gumbo? I'll grant you, there are some tourist trap/fly-by-night joints that are probably shite, but any place I'm aware of worth its salt can churn out a gumbo as good as (if not better than) you can get anywhere else.

next time you go, can you ask them for any tricks or techniques they might be willing to share??
(like what type of oil, sausage, veggies, spices, etc)
always looking for ways to improve on my gumbo.

It comes from a mix. I think it's oak grove. Friend of mine worked there in college. But, no, it's not the best gumbo.

If this is true I need to get me some of this mix because it is some of the best gumbo I have ever had and people around Lafayette always said the same when I lived there.

It is good gumbo, but I prefer Charley G's. Pour also has a decent gumbo.

Gumbo is traditionally served in large flat soup bowls over mounds of hot rice or with rice on the side. In OAK GROVE SMOKEHOUSE CREOLE GUMBO MIX the rice is already included, so it makes a complete one-dish meal. A much smaller bowl of gumbo served as a first course will give the most simple meal a gourmet touch. Each native South Louisiana family has its favorite gumbo recipe, the secrets of which are sought by gourmets the world over. With OAK GROVE SMOKEHOUSE CREOLE GUMBO MIX it is easy to create a perfect gumbo to suit every taste.
I'M NOT BUYING IT (literally)

While true, while I'm at one of these restaurants I'm probably ordering something more interesting than Gumbo.

That must not be the one, but they do use a mix and just add chicken and sausage.

Maybe one of my four downvoters can point to me the decent NO restaurants that serve shite gumbo, then.

Don't most of the mixes come with rice? What they serve is definitely not from that type of mix.
Posted on 9/28/16 at 3:13 pm to mouton
I don't know. I've never used a mix.

Herbsaint's Chicken and Andouille. It's dark and smokey and fantastic.

Commander's has a great Gumbo, Seafood.
I rarely order anything but seafood Gumbo. Like another poster said, most places do a good gumbo. If a place can't do a good gumbo, then I doubt they can do anything right.
Though most everyone here will say "grandma's is the best"
One of my biggest regrets was not getting my grandma to teach me her recipe before she passed.

Best gumbo I've ever had. Velvety texture.
