Can’t tell you how many mornings I’ve dug ditches then knocked out 2 pork sandwiches and a glass of tea.

At least half the Saturdays of my youth were spent working outside as the “hands” for whatever endeavor my dad was working on that week. Cleaning fence lines, building fence, cutting and hauling wood, etc. I’m still tired from it and it’s been 30 years. There’s a spot on my left hand from it that I could probably hold a lighter under and not feel for a few seconds.

Knowing though, that at lunch, we were going to eat BBQ got me through it. Just about every Saturday. And it was BBQ as God intended, served at the same spot daddy had been eating at since 1970, and still owned today by the same man. Chopped pork, hand cut French fries, iced tea.

I can still hear my dad tell the waitress “two chopped sandwiches and a glass of tea. One for him, fries, and tea also”. And he’s been gone 14 years.

- Southern Texas style defined by open pits or burying the meat in the ground, barbacoa and cabrito meat.

on that note, any of you baws been to Vera's in Brownsville? Trying to work my way across the top 50 list and finally made my way down there this morning. Only place still serving barbacoa made the real way, which is to say wrapping the heads in foil and cooking them in pits over coal. It was kind of a disappointment though. I've had better barbacoa. I'll be back tomorrow to try more of the menu.

Also, kolaches are worthless

I lived in brownsville as a kid .. we never went to Vera's. LOL

We didn't go to Southmost much, but that's because we lived on the other side of town. (out old military hwy)

Although, I do remember going to the Vermillion a lot, but it's not a bbq/barbacoa place. It used to be good.

More like sauce/rub. It's not getting more smoke than it already got for 12+ hours.

Pulled pork is my least favorite form Of bbq
French fries over Tater tots every time .
Lobster is just tough shrimp.
Most Mushrooms taste like dirt .
Whataburger smells like a bowling alley.
Mayonnaise is gross.
Frying instead of sautéed crab claws should be illegal.
Any form of keurig brewed coffee is garbage.
If the yellow of a an egg is hard it‘s trash.
The rice at Mexican restaurants is not good.
Mint chocolate chip ice cream sucks.
