Historic New Orleans grocery Circle Food Store in peril, future is 'day to day'

Mismanagement
Grants
Bank Loans
Embezzlement
2017 flood
Can't compete with Walmart
Barely any revenue coming in, no fresh produce or meats.
Seems to me this was ill advised from the beginning.
"It took more than eight years and millions in taxpayer subsidies for the historic Circle Food Store in Treme to reopen after Hurricane Katrina.
Now, just four years after the grocery store and neighborhood landmark returned to business, its owners are on the brink of shutting it down, mired in debt and fighting their own family in court over money they claim was embezzled from the business.
“We’re still here but we’re in bad shape,” said owner Dwayne Boudreaux Jr. as he stood amid the half-stocked shelves of the 80-year old store, which re-opened in 2014 following an $8 million renovation funded largely through bank loans, city-provided grants and more than $4.4 million in tax credits.
On Wednesday morning, the store was staffed only by Boudreaux and his wife, Catrina. A trickle of customers walked through the aisles. Its hours of operation have been erratic and its fresh food areas are now mostly barren.
“I’ve been trying my best to keep it open, but it looks like that might be impossible,” Boudreaux said. “We are just looking at it day to day.”

1. Owners pocketed a ton of that grant money
2. Probably half of their inventory gets lifted, possibly with the blessing of the owners since they know its not gonna last

I'm sure the owners are driving a sensible car.

Cannot survive without government subsidies. This was a bad idea in the first place.

This.
If there is a viable market a "real" business would move in and make it work. This was a boondoggle.

Another Short Term Rental coming our way!

Kinda sad actually.
I use to deliver to them in the late 90s and they were thriving.... we would deliver 400-500 cases of produce to them twice a week.

I remember a little convenient store in Shreveport back in the day that had a sign the read, NO customers past this point. TRESPASSERS WILL BE VIOLATED

This makes me mad, too. $8 million on a single business....imagine the support $8 mil could have provided for a whole slew of legit corner stores to, say, offer some produce along with the usual stuff.
It’s right up there with the redevelopment of Dryades Market as a big load of crap.

These three right there explains it all
It's a brand name in New Orleans, at least for locals. With the right management in place and a marketing plan, there real reason why that location cannot work out

Heck, they could simply handout sales flyers to the bums in the tent city under the I 10 overpass.
I'm sure bums need groceries like everyone else and the normal people, they certainly wouldn't mind wading through the throngs of bums to get to the Circle Food store.

They don’t like those crappy Mt Olive pickles or apparently wheat bread either.
