An allergy and an intolerance is not the same thing. As an example, you can have adverse reactions to gluten but not have Celiac Disease.

<—— zero allergies or intolerances here, thankfully.

If they only had, say, bloating or stomach pain or diarrhoea then we took them out because that could be a lactose intolerance or a food intolerance,” said Gupta

So they skewed their results?

Intolerance =\= allergy

People with an intolerance should still avoid their trigger food.

Also, read the study.

These data suggest that at least 10.8% (>26 million) of US adults are food allergic, whereas nearly 19% of adults believe that they have a food allergy.

A lot of people are out of hand, but peanuts are probably the most dangerous food. One of my cousins really is nearly that allergic to them. If they touch anything she eats she gets violently ill.

After the 'food intolerant' subjects were removed:

quote:

...10.8% of participants were deemed to have at least one convincing food allergy, almost twice as many – 19% – reported they had such a problem.

quote:

I often see patients who think that they have a severe allergy who either aren’t allergic or who have mild allergy. They may have been unnecessarily prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors and be on a restricted diet avoiding even trace exposure to the suspected culprit,” he said, noting that this could cause significant anxiety and difficulties.

I found out about a food intolerance I have from Tom Fitzmorris on the radio. It's escolar, a white fish, sometimes called white tuna at sushi restaurants. It gave me instant (almost) diarrhea. Once I started avoiding it, the problem went away.

Honestly, there are people who will overreact to any number of things when it comes to medicine. And Dr. Google doesn’t help.

This seems like a dumb thing to be worrying about.

And using all caps and words like “melt” and “snowflakes” makes you look dumber than the people misdiagnosing themselves.

This is probably the funniest thing that I have read today!!!!

That being said, 75% of medicine allergies that people claim are not legit either. I don’t have literature to support that, just experience.

I have to say, if that’s the worst insult I hear this week, I’m ok with it.

I wonder if Chicken will approve the name change?

It’s been a while since I’ve been to either, but I’m sure that can be arranged.

I grew up with a milk allergy. I was unable to eat chocolate, milk, or ice cream until I was well into my 20's. It just went away. It was brutal growing up though and not being able to eat/drink what everyone else could. While I do believe that a large portion of these allergies are BS, some are real. Mine certainly was.

I have oral allergy syndrome. Not too severe since I know what food I can and cannot eat. It basically just makes my mouth itch.

It definitely sounds made up when I tell someone.

It includes bananas, melons, pecans, walnuts, and pretty much any fresh veggie.

I’ve intubated (medic not a doctor) more than one person due to peanut allergies. I’ve also had several more not as bad but still close calls due to it

A lot of this is just picky unsophisticated eaters who want to be 'special', but you don't want to mess around because an actual allergy can be dangerous. I had a problem with getting hives, tongue and throat swelling, it's pretty scary when it happens to you.

Allergist ran a ton of tests, at first thought it was barley (which is in almost everything) and nightshade family, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant. But he wisely advised me that it was likely short term, which was what happened. After a few months it never occurred again.
