It's more likely a Guthries rip off. I'm not saying Cane's sauce isn't better, but Canes didn't invent the concept.

Zaxby's existed before Cane's by 6 years. Zaxby's existed outside of Georgia by 2 years. Guthrie's existed decades before both.

Bingo. Companies (especially food companies) rip off concepts all of the time. Look at Izzo's/Moe's/Chipotle/Qdoba/Zippy's. People see something working and want a piece of the pie on the profits.
Graves was successful because he marketed very well and put a tremendous emphasis on management and customer service.

Was there any Zaxby's or Guthrie's in his market when he started?
Zaxby's is loved around here because there is no Cane's or Guthrie's. Just CFA, which I would put far ahead of both Zaxby's and Cane's in both categories you mention.

Todd Graves stole the idea for chicken fingers and is an a-hole. And Canes sucks. The fingers are too small and their prices have gone up since they opened 20 years ago. WTF!?

When I was living in Charlotte my co-workers liked to go to Zaxbys. That was always my top complaint when I went there. It's not just the fries, all of the food is salty. I don't lover Cane's by any means but it is way better than Zaxbys.

We lived in Athens for 4 years. Went to Zaxby's a few times...went to that Canes on Baxter many times. The only things that were "better" about Zaxby's was the fact that there was a variety. If I walked in knowing I wanted chicken fingers, I would 100% go to Cane's and there wouldn't even be a debate.
If I was interested in a salad, or wings, or some combination thereof, I'd lean Zaxby's. The two are not the same...not even in concept.
And the comments about how salty Zaxby's food is are 100% dead on.

There's one in Lafayette, never been yet. I guess I won't go anytime soon with that review. Canes, I eat maybe 2 a year and that's only because I'm watching my niece who loves that stuff.
