Is there a decent brand anymore? I’ve got Tony’s, Zat, and Fiesta, all are tasteless green powder. Anyone sell the leaves?

I'm pretty sure everyone on this board has their own sassafras plantation

My grandma had a tree in her back yard and would actually grind her own leaves and put it in baby food jars.

That's some old school Cajun shite, man. I love it.

Mine did too. Change plantation to small farm and that’s not necessarily an inaccurate statement.
There used to be a man at the downtown BR farmers market that would grind it while you waited. Not sure if he’s still there.

Cajun Chef is good. Louisiana Fish Fry makes it, but I haven't tried it. Once in a while, I see fresh ground at a farmer's market.

... same goes for the bay leaf , you can't find a decent bay leaf ...

I remember years back, one of my coworkers who grew them had so many that she was struggling to give them all away. I grabbed the lot from the brake room after noticing nobody else wanted them.
I still remember how fragrant they were in my gumbos all these years later. Freshness makes a huge difference in herbs and spices.

When I had my first kid, I would save all of the jars to give to a family friend's dad who would do exactly this. We always had fresh file. So much better than the store stuff.

That's why I have a big container with a live bay leaf plant in it. It is more a bush than a tree, but puts out way more than I need.
I'll pick about 30 leaves every so often and let them dry just a bit on a paper towel and then store them in a jar in the pantry.
When I boil seafood, I just pick a couple dozen and toss them in the water with all my seasonings.

They grew wild around south LC. Old folks would only pick them on a full moon in August
