Sweetest thing on god's green earth is a Georgia Peach. Traveling for work in GA this week and being peak peach in GA, I need a bucket, maybe 2. Stopped in a Publix and with the mountains of peaches stacked on 2 islands, all the peaches were from California. How does that even happen? And yunno, GA peaches are essentially banned in California. Been trying to get them in for over 20 years and unless Jared, a fresh GA peach ain't happening. Georgia should ban them fuggers and make things right. Hittin the farmers market tomorrow. I will not be denied

Moving to GA in just over a month. Problem solved...

Georgia Peaches

Stopped in a Publix

Problem revealed.
Publix sells imported shrimp in Savannah so don’t expect anything local unless it’s by accident.

Ah, I did not know that. My first time in a Publix and my takeaway was beats starving. The principal tho. Just because they can does not make it right. THE PEACH STATE should not allow peaches from anywhere not called the peach state. Right?

Alabama peaches are better.

Doesn't get better than basket of peaches from the Burris fruit stand on the way to Gulf Shores.

I stop in Clanton, AL on my way to Bham during peach season. Outstanding peaches.

Most people don't know this and assume GA is. Just three counties (Spartanburg, Cherokee, and York) produce more peaches than the entire state of GA and the state as a whole produces twice the peaches GA does. Even NJ produces more peaches than GA. Both SC and NJ peaches are sweeter than the GA varieties. Of course, today CA probably produces 10 times the peaches SC does.

This isn't a constant. NJ, & GA flip-flop for the 3rd & 4th positions on an annual basis. CA is always #1 & SC is the perennial #2 producers of peaches.

Rio Oso peaches out of CA are some of the better varieties out there.

Peak peach season for Georgia was about 3 weeks ago. The problem with concentrations of orchards or groves in one area for over 100 yrs is that they get a lot of diseases. Same is true with citrus in Florida with the greening.

Georgia's peaches are mainly tourism because it's just harder to grow them here now. Not only that but if you go to a chain grocery store, you won't find local fruit or meat. You've got to find a peach orchard in middle Georgia. Dickies or Lane are big tourist traps.

Anecdotally, many peach orchards in the last five years have been replanted pecans in the middle GA area, that I've noticed.

Accurate. If I were traveling through Georgia, I would actively seek out local peanuts, pecans, and Vidalia onions over peaches. That’s not to say that the peaches are bad, they are in fact some of the best. It’s just overhyped amongst tourists.

I am from and live in Georgia. My friends are constantly telling me that they’ve had better peaches from other places as some sort of “gotcha.” My response - “I don’t doubt it, but what about these other things?” They usually don’t have an answer.
