Were is the best place to buy fresh fish in Baton Rouge? Excluding Catfish, Salmon and Tuna, those seem to be the only ones that are readily available. Looking for something different.

Also is there a certain day of the week that will have more variety than others.

I asked this same question a couple years ago. Sounds like nothing's changed in this town.

Years ago, Maxwell's used to get some decent stuff. Anybody shop there anymore?

Call Tony’s 4 days in advance and they will order it for you. Freshest fish you can buy anywhere.

Ended up getting a couple of whole Red Snapper from Rouses on Airline for $8.99lb cooked them whole on my new pellet grill, they came out pretty good.

I think that its funny. the one fish that to my knowledge is not native to the gulf other than Tuna, (Salmon), always seem to be the most readily available. If anyone knows the answer I would be very interested to know.

Fresh Market and Alexander’s almost always have grouper and often swordfish. Alexander’s also started carrying Royal Reds for those that enjoy those in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Rouses on airline and Alexanders. Alexanders probably has more of the exotic fish available.

Just b/c they have them doesn't mean they are always fresh. Sometimes you'll get some fish from them that is fresh, sometimes it smells like fish.

Saw some at Rouses didn't look all that appealing.

My guess is 75% of the fish and shrimp you see in groceries were frozen. It’s just standard practice now. I’m sure there are exceptions and I know some stores will have fresh, but unless you know it wasn’t frozen, assume it was.

About a year ago, I was in the mood for Mahi and my son and his girl were coming over. Rouses had a part of a filet in their display. It was clearly marked "fresh". I asked if he had any more and he went back in the freezer and came out with a frozen vacuum packed filet. I asked him "Doesn't the sign say fresh". His answer was it was fresh frozen. WTF. Same store tried to pass off some kind of green fish with longitudinal stripes and a small mouth as speckled trout when I asked what they were.

I may be wrong on this, but I thought this was fine and not a bad thing. I thought I had read that here before.

Isn't seafood that is flash frozen directly from the water supposed to be better than seafood that has traveled some time to the store unfrozen?

How many successful fresh seafood vendors do you think one mid sized city needs?

I think "flash frozen" is a process that uses a water vapor or small droplets to freeze it. The fish he got for me was in a vac pac filled with water.

Virtually all seafood consumed is frozen. Properly handled, it’s as good as fresh. Improperly handled fish is awful, whether fresh or frozen.

No retail outlet in BR is routinely handling never frozen fin fish: the good stuff goes to the restaurant trade, not to retail supermarkets. Sorry, that’s just the nature of the market. If you were in a larger city, perhaps, with specialty fishmongers and a demanding fresh-buying population....but we live in an area where every other person on the block is out fishing recreationally all the time. That depresses demand at the retail level, for sure.
