FRANKS RESTAURANT, B.R. has the best muffaletta anywhere

I've eaten breakfast and lunch many times over the years and decided today to try their muffaletta sandwich and I was totally suprised how good it was. It was reasonably priced at $19 for a whole sandwich but I could not eat it all. It did come with fries also. The bread was thin and toasted and was as close to New Orleans bread as you can get. A litlle crunchy and buttery. I would highly recommend this muff if any are in the mood for it. I think I need a nap now lol.

Friend,
Frank's uses Leidenheimer for its muffulettas, which are good, but not as good as Gendusa's muffuletta rounds. Why would someone toast a muffuletta? They come baked.

Gendusa's is a cold muff, correct? And cold muffuletta's are horrible.

you've obviously never been to Cannatella Grocery on Gov't Street. They have their own bakery and have been making muffalettas for over 100 years. The family of Italian immigrants originally settled in NOLA and moved to Melville years later.
$17 for a whole muffaletta AND they sell the fresh baked bread, quality meats, cheeses, and their own Italian olive salad mix if you wanna make them at home. I buy 4-6 of their muffaletta bread at a time as they freeze very well for future use.
This was my version after warming in the oven

Friend,
A muffuletta is simply the name of the seeded round loaf of Italian bread. A muffuletta sandwich is meat, cheese, and olive salad served on a muffuletta.
Gendusa's is a bakery in Gentilly that opened in 1922 serving both French loves and Italian loaves. I am uncertain when they began baking muffulettas, but they have never served muffuletta sandwiches to my knowledge.
I am of the opinion that such sandwiches should be served at room temperature as they were first served and as they were intended. Heating them negatively impacts the flavor and texture of the olive mix, unpleasantly releases the oils from the meat, and distorts the cheese. The new muffuletta sandwiches served at The Napoleon House are heated, and are probably the best version of the heated muffuletta sandwich, but would be much better at room temperature. The best muffuletta sandwiches come from Central Grocery, and I cannot wait for them to reopen. The versions being sold around town today under the Central Grocery label are drier, thinner, and just not very good.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Everyone knows that the best muffuletta sandwich in the Baton Rouge area is Anthony's.

You and Tom Fitzmorris agree, but it seems you two are in the minority when it comes to how a muffuletta sandwich should be served and enjoyed.
I could not disagree more and in fact, the heat allows the most delectable flavors of the olive salad to be released, the toasty bread and seeds imparting a wonderful nuttiness and fragrance and the saltiness of the cured meats deserve a tinge of maillard reaction.

Had Cannatella's yesterday and it was a bit salty, TBH. and I like salt.

My favorite lately is the muffuletta from the Iverstine deli on Perkins (near Essen).
I'm a big fan of both Cannatella and Anthony's. But neither are convenient for me.

Yep. Something is not right with Anthony’s olive salad mix.

No Pocorello's was the GOAT but it's closed down. You need to get out more.

As far as whether Gendusa’s serves muffs, one is probably referring to Gendusa’s Bakery in Gentilly and the other to Gendusa’s Restaurant in Kenner.

Pocorello's closed? Did something happen to the owners? I loved that place.
(sorry if I am way behind times, but I've been away from BR for quite some time)

I don’t like either one. I haven’t found a good one in Baton Rouge. I would like DiMartino’s in Algiers, please!
