I picked this up today for $60 (originally asking $175). It was upside down all weekend, so no one realized it was a bourbon barrel. It was in the back corner of the store room. I flip it over, see “Distillery”, and didn’t think twice at $60.

I can make out distillery and whiskey. It has CLE... KY, the city, but not sure what it says. Just after whiskey, it says “SOD...”

Edit- the second line is “whiskey sour mash” (I believe)

Update:

It looks like it’s Jim Beam from Clermont, KY
Thank you PvilleBaw!!!

Not sure where it's from, but based on the rings in the wood, I'd say its about 350 years old.

ETA: That's pretty cool, btw.

Perhaps Clermont. That would make it a Jim Beam barrel.

Now all you need to do is pour about 40 gallons of some stout in there, wait a year, then PROFIT.

I have a bourbon stout I've been saving. Do you drink it at room temp or cold?

ya gotta Goldilocks it, pour it and lets is sit for 5 mins or so
you dont want room temp or out the fridge cold
just in the middle IMO is the sweet spot for flavors

Whatcha got?

I'll pour them cold and begin drinking, understanding that it's a spectrum and some sips will be colder than I prefer, many will be really good, and some will be warmer.

Come by, we can drink some brown stuff.

After some sanding, I did uncover “Beam” and maybe a date (of 1977).

It’s going to be a long haul to refinish it. I’m not sanding it down to the bare wood, but it will take me a month or so to finish it. The inside, I’m just sanding away the loose burnt pieces and adding a polyurethane.

Two slats done and one lid
