You've had the wrong ones. ESB (Extra Special Bitter) is basically a British Pale Ale. Green Man ESB is hoppy/malty goodness. 32 IBUs and 5.5 ABV puts it squarely in the pale ale range almost exactly the same as Sierra Nevada's pale ale.

2BD is an OB IPA. I really like this one. Its not fantastic, but I like it better than roughly 90% of the hoppy beers regularly available on our Louisiana shelves.

Please tell me more about Asheville beer. I've certainly never been there or drank the beer.
ESBs suck. They are too malt forward. That one is no different. If that beer is a goddess it's more like a transvestite goddess. You think you know what you're getting until that malt wiener punches you right in the taste buds and you're disgusted.

It is possible to be malty and hoppy at the same time. Arrogant Bastard comes to mind as one that does this. Also, Russian Imperial Stouts also can be like that.

I'm actually a fan of the Blue OB IPA. A very crushable summer time IPA. Boil some shrimp and crabs and drink that. Thank me later.
