My daughter was diagnosed yesterday.

I found this didn't come on suddenly. She had a lump on her neck and the doctor tells you it can be a lot of things. An infection, or a cyst. You take antibiotics and start eliminating things from the list of possible causes. Every time you go back to the doctor, you mark something off the list, and the list of possibilities gets smaller. Finally, you get to the only thing it could be. The only thing you don't think you can handle. The thing that isn't supposed to happen. Your child has cancer.

I don't know how I'm supposed to handle it. I know the prognosis is good for remission, but it's hard to not notice that thousands of people die every year from this very thing. But I realize that I must handle it. I have to be there and show her strength and give her the strength she needs, whenever she needs it. I need to encourage her when she is discouraged, and carry her when she can't walk. I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I'll find a way.
