What’s yall’s go-to when making old fashions? I have a buddy that swears by Angel’s Envy but that shite is too expensive to be mixing with bitters! I just picked up a liter of Costco’s bourbon and it’s pretty damn good!

Would you mind posting which recipe you’re using? I have a feeling you might be using too heavy a hand on something.

Usually bulleit, makers, or buffalo trace. Been on an eagle rare kick lately though.

I don’t use a specific recipe....really don’t even measure...
1/2 sugar cube
3 dashes Angostura bitters
3 dashes Angostura Orange bitters
2 oz. bourbon
Luxardo cherry and an orange peel
Sugar swizzle stick
Large ice cube

This is my recipe, I measure to keep it in proportions, but may double or triple depending on the ability to quickly refil.
2oz bourbon on rye
2 bar spoonfuls of simple syrup
Couple of dashes of bitters
Pour over a large cube if available or a few smaller cubes of ice
Add orange peel, sometimes add a cherry or two

That’s three times the bitters the standard recipe calls for (two dashes Ang). Now, that’s not to say you shouldn’t make your drink the way you want it, but when using nicer whiskey, maybe roll back the bitters a bit.

Bulleit Rye
These cherries
Orange slice
Simple syrup
Dash of orange bitters
Dash of bitters
I mash the cherries in the glass with some of the cherry syrup, the bitters, and simple syrup before adding anything else
I then add the whiskey and then a couple cubes of ice.
Then squeeze and add the orange Slice to finish.

I like something with a higher prrof for OF. Used to love making them with Bookers but since they jacked the price up I use OGD114
