Etiquette question - Wife says position of knife on plate determines

whether the server takes your plate away or not.
She says if you're eating the knife should remain on the side of the plate.
If you're done, you lay the knife longwise across the top edge of the plate (so its parallel to you) and that is the signal to the server to take the plate away.
If its perpendicular to you on the side of the plate, that means you're still eating.
I've done some experiments and so far I can't determine if this is true. Servers don't seem to notice one way or the other..of course all these experiments are done at 3am at Waffle House.
Has anyone heard of this?

odd, once i start using my knife i keep it in the plate. I don't put it back on the table.

oh lord have mercy thats even more complicated. 
i'll never remember that. i liked her idea better, it seemed simpler but the reverse of what that pic suggests.

When I first started my career out of college, the consulting company made us go through a fancy etiquette course in Chicago. That's what they practiced. Now using confirmation bias I see it used everywhere, and practice it myself.

Yes and there's a very practical reason for it. Properly positioned, the silverware doesn't fall off the plate when the server takes it away.

And the server doesnt interrupt your conversation to ask if you are finished eating.

When your server asks, "Hey buddy, you done", just go with "yes".
