Folks, it's my birthday weekend and I'm looking to try something new. I know this place has been there forever, but I've never given it a shot. Any good?

You’re thinking of Los Reyes.

El Rio Grande isn’t where I’d go unless you want to sit in a small restaurant with a bunch of old loudmouth drunks and eat somewhat sub par tex mex.

Excellent old school mexican at great prices. Margaritas are strong and reasonably priced. Reminds me of a NO dive eatery.

Place is a dump in a terrible part of town, but food is great.

My Mexican friends always laugh and say that place isn't even Mexican. It's owned by Hondurans.

That's good to hear, as I understand the owner passed away not too long ago. Good to know there was a succession plan for the place.

It's a treasure.

It's about as mediocre as possible.

It's not a place you'll go for the ambiance.. or the nachos.

Don't get the nachos. I got them and they're like 8 chips on a plate with canned cheese on top.. and it tasted like they were microwaved.

The chicken enchilada was pretty good.

It's definitely hit-and-miss... mostly miss... but the hits are great. Those chili cheese enchiladas with the fried eggs on top are legit.

Used to love it, but the last two times I went the food was waaay over salted. Maybe I'll give it another shot one day. It is definitely a hole in the wall joint.

The owner of El Rio Grande and the old Carlos ( Florida Blvd and Airline Hwy) restaurants are brothers. RIP Joe.

Joe’s Obit

Now, Mestizos in BTR, across from TJ Ribs, is owned by Carlos’s son, Jim Urdiales. Jim is Joes nephew. I like the food and drinks at Mestizos.

Yes.

1 year ago had a house margarita and the drink was green. That's not how it works.
