This is the sad reality of BR. It's almost 50% black and 50% white and yet the two sides still can't commingle. I'm not blaming anyone either because it's a complicated issue and neither side has come up with any kind of solution worth a damn. But it makes it very hard on business when a large portion of the population simply moves away from you as the other side moves in.

Rent is in line with a decent sized city for these businesses yet the reality is they are working with a potential client pool of a small city because of the social workings of it's people.

Which is a massive part of the problem. It's just sad.

You've got to be kidding. The St. George CATS buses max out at 4 riders per on a busy day.

For having so many beer taps, Draft House fails to have a selection that is appealing...and most of them are empty anyway.

Also, the layout is terrible and the beer is over priced.

Not sad it's closing. Here's to hoping a legit sports bar opens in its place.

I don't think you can really associate him with the school when he has been out for years and years. It's not like he works for them or something.

The two sides commingle all the time. There are just certain elements within each of those sides that ruin it for everyone. Whether its idiotic trashy white baws who get drunk and want to fight everyone or criminal black hoodlums who try to rob people walking back to their cars, they both ruin the "going out" experience for everyone else.

I looked into downtown apartments not too long ago and the property manager said they have to have x amount of subsidized tenants according to a city ordinance. They even had one available at her building but said that it could only be rented as section 8 because they didn't have enough units to comply.

I feel like that is what is killing downtown more than anything, and it has everything to do with Delgadk being the face of the Recall SWB movement.

Not being able to walk around with a beer is the primary reason downtown is struggling?

Yes, because “going downtown” was all about bar-hopping. See, none of the bars downtown are “the best” at what they do. There are better sports bars than happy’s, better music bars than B&T’s, better patios than Roux House, better beer bars than Draft House, and better cocktail bars than Huey’s. However, puting them all together makes for a great experience because you can please big groups. None of the bars charge covers most nights, so groups of friends would start at one end of the street and work their way down buying drinks along the way. Often times, Draft House, due to its patio, was the end point where once the girls get tired of walking in heels, they would chill out and drink. Open container kills bar hopping. Since people cannot bar hop as easily, fewer groups go downtown, opt for those better versions of the single kind of bar they want (Bulldog for patio, Cove for beer, Phil Brady’s for music, Radio Bar or Ivar’s for cocktails, etc) Fewer customers means less money. Bars start closing.

Maybe not primary but it's a huge issue. It's one of the last nails in the coffin I fear. The bars that are doing well are grandfathered in to crazy low leases. New places can't survive The oc law started being enforced bc of the other major problem that's been mentioned. People sitting outside of bars drinking out of their cars caused this, it's had a negative effect.

I never thought about the potential that a swipe at Delgado himself may have been the reason for SWB/BRPD suddenly enforcing that law.

I agree though, lax enforcement of open container was a pretty big draw for that area. It helped lead to a more festive atmosphere and it gave out of town guests something that they probably couldn't do where they were from.

I'll add though, not only are Draft House and Huey's "Not the best" at what they do - they are pretty close to the worst at their particular type of bars.

Happy's I'd label as a "multi-concept bar" rather than sports bar (currently: Tavern, Piano Bar, Patio w/music). At that label, I would put Happy's as the best of what it does in town. I think it shows too, they have 3 "packed" nights, and the rest of the nights they're still viable.
