So if you have a 50 dollar order you would tip 10 bucks? My drivers' would've loved you.
That's about right. My orders usually run less than $30 and I tip $5. I figure the guy/girl has to pay for gas and has to deal with traffic their whole shift and I appreciate not having to leave my house. So yeah, $10 for a $50 order sounds right.

I wish everyone felt like you.

At the place I work, we each have to take 1-2 shifts a week being the to-go person. There is no bartender.. we are literally just the to-go person. We box the food. We prepare any things that go with it. We make all soups and salads (not the kitchen).
Obviously, I don't expect someone to tip me because it's still part of my job to do that shite.. but don't say that they do nothing. That's untrue.

As the to-go person, do you get paid waiter wages per hour? I would figure you probably don't.
And by making the soup you mean ladling it into a container, right? So that takes about 5 seconds. I'm sure "salad prep" takes about the same time.

I always tip, unless there is a tip jar, hate those things. Usually a couple of bucks.

Royal China, guess who is taking my order? Guess who is boxing it up? It is either a bartener or server. They are taking some time to serve me. I will see these people again next week or next month. Why would I not tip them a little? Of course not 20%, but a minimum $2.
Mrs. Shirley takes care of me. I take care of Mrs. Shirley

You seem rather cynical about the whole industry. I eat out a lot (every lunch and 2 to 3 times for dinner). I do takeout from time to time if I work and am feeling lazy. I've gotten to know and made a lot of friends in the service industry, and most of them take their jobs pretty seriously and are good at what they do. I appreciate their work.
Maybe it has something to do with the type of eateries we're talking about. I rarely eat at fast food places (maybe once a year in a pinch)nor do I go to franchise places except on the rare occasion. Not being a snob. It's just that I have so many other choices that I like better. So I guess I observe what these people do and I like to give them a little extra for their effort. I think serving up the food, putting all the extra items together and boxing everything up is worth a couple of bucks. I'm also pretty sure that at most of the places I go they pool those tips anyway.

he's not cynical. he's realistic. a to-go waitress doesn't make the soup. She's not browning the meat and adding the ingredients. She's just scooping it into a bowl and putting a lid on it.
And, the salads are largely premade as well.

And no, I don't tip at mcdonalds, taco bell, or the gas station before the smartasses chime in.
Guess I've been doing this wrong all along. Where is the line that you begin tipping for take out?
Not at McD's, taco bell, popeye's. What about Dominos drive thru? Subway? How about a pizza restaurant, like Pizza Hut, but you order for take out?
This is confusing.

I'm really not talking about whether the server actually prepares the food. Again, we may be talking about different types of restaurants. And, regardless, the server does take time to put your order together.

We don't know what they do, because we aren't there experiencing the service. That's the nature of take out.
Sitting down in a restaurant, I get a server with a low hourly wage, that is tasked with providing good service for a "commission" or "tip".
When I go to a take out counter and order a sandwich and wait for it to be made... I expect my sandwich to be priced to include good service behind the counter and a quality sandwich. There's a tip jar for the girl running register? What for?
When I walk into the Outback-To-Go door and pay for my order... I don't see how that's any different. It would seem to me that if the people working that counter are expecting tips, and don't get tips, they'd start complaining to management and resist taking shifts on that counter, for what they get paid in the restaurant. And I would expect management to have to up the pay accordingly to keep that counter staffed.

I'll be totally honest, I RARELY ever get food to go from restaurants (not counting fast food). So I will say that if I saw people enough that a more personal relationship evolved over time, then yes, I would feel more inclined to tip for a to go order

i worked as a waiter in college. It took me less than 2 minutes to put their food in a bag...and prepare the idiots chips and salsa to go on top of that! (worked at Serranos)

thank you. a to-go person really does nothing more than put your food in a bag and hand it to you. they don't prep it. they don't cook it. they don't serve it to me. they don't refill my drinks. they hand me a bag with food in it. for that you really shouldn't expect a tip

sums it up perfectly
I'd rather tip the "sandwich artist" at subway then a person working behind a counter and handing me a bag of food

Well, because I have a tendency to :beatdeadhorse:
And I've been away from the computer for awhile, I'll just say that restaurants are different and you cannot say with any certainty A) what the server in that given restaurant does to prepare the pickup order or B) whether or not those tips are pooled and shared with the back of the house and other servers.
Finally, WTF? God forbid you leave an extra buck or two for someone working in the service industry. Does it hurt your pocketbook? Does it offend your principles? Will it throw the free market system out of orbit?

The answer to all of the above is yes

Well, as long as you have a good reason.

What good does leaving a dollar do? It's doesn't impact me. It won't make a difference to the to-go person. It's a push. And tie goes to the runner, so that dollar is mine!
Seriously, if they were making $2.13 a hour as to-go person, then I would tip for sure. But I know they don't, and if they do then shame on the restaurant. On busy nights at Serranos, a waiter might get chosen to expodite. They were paid $8.00 a hour. To-go has to be similar.
