Our microwave went out about a week ago & we just haven't gotten around to buying a new one. As the days have passed, I've realized I'm really not missing it that much. We've had leftovers a few times but I heated stuff up on the stove or in the oven. I'm not a big fan of defrosting stuff in the microwave so I haven't missed it there. The only time I can say I actually missed having one was the other night when I had a craving for microwave popcorn. I got up, opened the box, took out a packet, turned to put it in the microwave & remembered. I wonder if I "really" need one? Anyone else here not have a microwave or just not use it?

I guess the only time I'll really miss it is when I want to cook a steak. (Could t resist)

obviously no one should need a microwave, my GIL doesn't have one because she thinks it will give her cancer

a microwave is purely a convenience thing

I could live without it, but as said already, it's very convenient and I use mine all the time for reheating, popcorn and a lot of other things. Corn on the cob is the best in the microwave. I'd hate to go back to boiling corn and slaving over getting the silk off the cobs when I'm going to use fresh corn for another dish. That's one example of why I love it so. Unless I couldn't afford one, I will always have one.

I could live without one, but I can't deny the convince of these

I'm going to try the corn on the cob though. That sounds good.

Haven't had one in 6 months. Haven't missed it at all and will likely never buy one on my own volition. Not a big leftovers person nor do I eat popcorn, so just don't have many uses for it. When I make gumbo or chili I just reheat on the stove. Takes about 5 minutes.

My son eats leftovers multiple times a week. And when he decides he's hungry, your arse needs to get in gear. I actually mentioned the other day how miserable it must have been raising children without the convenience of the microwave.

Reheating rice would be the biggest hassle of not having a microwave.

Corn on the cob doesn't get any easier than this.

LINK

If I just need to clean the corn, I put it in for a minute and that heats it enough to steam the silks off. I take some of the thicker husks off before I do it, but not too many. It needs to steam.

I make a lot of soups that I freeze in individual serving containers for work nights and for others. Defrost in the microwave and pour it in a bowl, heat to the temp I want. Done. No extra pot to clean.

Same with tamales. Put them in a small serving casserole, sprinkle a little water, cover with plastic wrap, punch a few holes and heat. They will steam with the addition of the water. No pot or colander required.

I could list a lot of things that are so much more efficient done in the microwave with less clean up.

Do you really need an oven? Can't you just eat out every night?

Do you really need a fridge? Can't you just use an ice chest?

Do you really need AC? Just open a window.

Do you really need a washer? Just go down to the creek and wash your clothes on a rock.

I'm pretty sure I only use mine for the kitchen timer function when I cook stuff in the real oven.

I use it for microwave popcorn, but my wife got a popcorn cooker recently and we made a batch that turned out awesome, so that use might be obsolete.

Also use it for baked potatoes in a potato bag, they come out excellent.

And reheating leftovers occasionally.

So, don't really NEED a microwave since all of that can be done in other ways, but it is convenient.

The convenience comes in with not having nearly as many pain in the arse dirty dishes. Let's say you dont have a microwave and have a container of gumbo leftover that you want to stretch out a few days. You have to dirty another small pot or sauce pan every time you want to heat some up instead of just the one bowl you will be eating out of. What would you rather do, use the microwave and dirty a few bowls or have to clean pots every night?

I'll go a step further. Having thought of the many things for which I use the microwave, I've decided it's more than convenient. It's a luxury.
