luna de noche in carencro. food isnt spectactular but the owner is great and by far it is the best spot for drinks and tequila in the area. everything fresh and hand squeezed. she has some very unique tequilas only found in certain areas of mexico. if you like that real shite give her a visit.

We have one we go to about 85% of the time and rotate a few others 15% of the time.
We've found our homebase will shift every 8-12 months. Not sure if it's the turn over or what but it seems the salsa/cheese dip/food changes from time to time.
We have a LOT of great authentic places i.e. corn tacos costing $1. Tex-Max isn't as much as our preference.

I think the go-to Mexican concept was especially prevalent in the Deep South where every town of 20k+ had 5 strip mall Mexican places (90s/00s) that all had the same menu items and were pretty similar from place to place. There wasn't really any reason to go to El Ranchero over La Hacienda, they were nearly identical.
I definitely grew up with that and we'd go to the same Mexican place exclusively for a couple of years before finding somewhere else for a given time. With the rise of tex-mex and more variation in the Southeast, I feel like it's less of a thing now because people tend to branch out more.

Non-descript tex-mex in a strip mall 5 minutes from work that's clean as a whistle, kitchen included. Take time to make friends with the manager, who doubles as the bartender. Double servings of carnitas and 2 for 1 margaritas, easy on the ice.
He never mentions that I ate lunch at his restaurant when I show up 6 hours later with my family.

In Covington, usually Nacho Kat. Sometimes we will mix it up with Habanero's.

Thought I'd bump this one up again. When in the Covington area, we have a group that enjoy Habanero's also. Food and Drinks are very good. Clean, attentive staff.

Some say it's basically the same.

Papa’s and beer? Does your wife enjoy the tequila shots??
Naw man. This isn't the famous club, by the same name, that is located in Crayfornia. This is a restaurant that serves up large portions of good Tex-Mex that is based out of NC and it's damn good for the money.
