I'm sure this has been covered on this board before, but I recently came into some money and would like to spend it on Tamales from the delta. What's the best restaurant/establishment to have them shipped from?

ETA: I'm joking on the money piece, I just want some tamales.

That's probably pretty tough to find. Most of the legit tamale places aren't run by folks that do a lot of internetting. I think Fat Mamas ships. But they're not very good delta hot tamales, imo.

Yep...Fat Momma's ain't very good.

OP, Contact Hot Tamale Heaven in Greenville, Ms. 662-702-5116. I don't know if they ship but they can possibly help. Their product is excellent.

Big Poppa's in the Donut Shop building in Natchez has good stuff. I don't have a number, but they may ship since the Shop does specialty baking.

Agreed on this, just wasn't sure if anyone knew of anywhere else. I'll contact the two places you listed. Thanks!

School me here. What is a delta tamale? I’m from east Houston Texas and know our tamales.

Me and you both, I’m in SE Louisiana and I see people talking about Delta Tamales on here. What makes those tamales stand out?

You can Google the term. The Delta Style is a very moist tamale, braised in a spicy broth...not a mouthful of masa that can be dry and less flavorful.

From the SFA primer: "Tamales from the Mississippi Delta are smaller than Latin-style tamales, are simmered instead of steamed, have a gritty texture from the use of corn meal instead of corn flour, have considerably more spice, and are usually served with juice that is the byproduct of simmering."

The ones I had at Fat Mama's, years ago, were not Delta style. They were like you'd typically find in LA or Texas. The ones from The Donut Shop in Natchez definitely were Delta. Small, spicy, juicy from the broth. Delicious.

In truth, Fat Momma’s are pretty bad. Margaritas must keep that place open. Big Poppa’s are legit

Yea, Fat Mamas are regular old dry tamales. Not worth a shite. Donut Shops are legit. As is Solly's. If Solly's ships that is who the OP needs to get them from.

it's not hard to make your own ... I followed the Manuel's recipe and tweaked it a little. I spent < $20 and ended up with around 6 dozen tamales. Total kitchen time invested around 2-3 hours which was prep, browning meat, and rolling tamales. Cook time was 5-6 hours spent in the crock pot on low. end result

After reading/looking at the criteria, M&M definitely fits the description of Delta tamales. Stop by. They are cheap and delicious.

Solly’s are mine and my parents favorites but they don’t come across as the type of people that ship. Not trying to sound condescending or anything like that, just that they have a store front and that is where they do their business.
