The time you cook rice and the amount of water that you add has more to do with whether it comes out sticky or where every grain separates.

I've never rinsed rice once, but if I want separate grains I'll cook it 25 minutes with a napkin around the lid to soak up some of the water.

I put my rice in a small strainer and rinse it under the faucet for maybe 20-25 seconds. Gets most of the surface starch off.

Most people use too much water when cooking rice. I use 1:1 rice to water plus 1/2 cup for evaporation.

1 cup rice = 1.5 cups water
2 cups rice = 2.5 cups water
Etc.

I never rinse rice, unless a recipe specifies to do so. I never saw my Mom or Maw-Maw rinse rice, so that's why I don't do it.

I rinse it once when I'm picking the discolored grains out.. Besides salt, adding just a few drops of vinegar to the water, whitens the pot of rice.

Yup. OTOH, I think 0.5 is too little extra when the cups get larger.

We wash until the water runs clear.

Washing (with clean water) cuts the arsenic in rice in half (google arsenic in rice).

We use less water than rice in our electric rice pressure cooker/steamer.

I don't like mushy rice.

My dad is a rice farmer and he never rinsed, so I don’t either.

It wasn’t until I was in college or later that I even knew that was a thing. He also put a few drops of vinegar when it was cooking, someone else in here mentioned that. One time I asked him why and he said that’s what the old men at the camp used to do so it’s what he does too. Honestly that was pretty much a good enough explanation for me and it’s something that makes me think of home, so I do it too.

Unrelated, I also learned from my grandpa to put onion slices in the grease when frying fish, supposedly keeps the grease from burning. Just another one of those things that probably doesn’t have a ton of science behind it, or maybe it does, but I’m not going to google it and have it ruined for me. I’m sure we all have those things we picked up along the way.

Depends on what you are making as far if you want to rinse it or not really. Cajun style rice dishes are usually kind of sticky.

If you want to make fried rice you better rinse the shite out of it, then let it sit and dry out til the next day in the fridge or else you'll end up with a mushy mess.

I didnt use to ever wash mine until I started making fried rice. Took me three times and watching chineese chicks make it on youtube to get it right. The two main keys is to rinse it really well and then let it dry out overnight before frying it.

That and use a really hot wok.

Basmati rice I make 1 cup rice - 1 2/3 cup stock/water - 1 tbsp olive oil. Bring to a boil, cover and cook on low for 18 minutes, let it sit for 5 min. Comes out perfect every time. Never rinse.
