I'm exchanging a heady for a pliny with Bmoney, and i'd be interested in hearing his comparison of the 2 when he gets it, so it's not just my opinion of the comparison of the 2.

I really had no idea what to expect with Heady, as i've never had it until yesterday. Wasn't sure if it was more of a Pliny type DIPA or what. Ghost was the first DIPA of it's kind that i've had, with the massive amounts of hops and juicy flavor. I don't think comparing ghost with pliney is fair to either as they contrast in flavors so much. Both hop forward excellent beers, just different in the goals of what each beer should be, IMO.

Why? Pouring releases the aroma and allows the beer to breathe.

Because the can (and John Kimmich) says so!!

John's opinion is that pouring it into the glass releases all the aroma and oxidizes the beer. In his opinion when you drink from the can it preserves a layer of CO2 on top of the beer and retains the aroma from start to finish.

I think it's probably because Heady is unfiltered and can be a pretty ugly after sitting for a week or two. It's not uncommon to see 'floater' in your glass.

John is also VERY OCD when it comes to the amount of dissolved O2 in his beer so that probably adds to it.

I'm on my phone, but there's a great video of the owner talking about Heady and why it's better out of the can, it has to do with the oxidation. He also talks about the sediment that appears over time. On a separate note, I've heard a lot of people say they like Focal more than Heady.

There were some floaters on the bottom 1/2 inch of the glass. But again, nothing i'm not used to with homebrewing. IMO, beer is always better in a glass, despite what the brewer of that beer may think.

Also, how badly could the beer oxidize within the 30 minutes or so it takes to drink the beer?

I appreciate the offer very much. I am not enough of a maven to have us go to that much effort.

I will keep it in mind when I am coming down, and if you have some or get some prior to then, I can bring something from ATL to trade.

I will be there for Auburn, Florida and ARK.

Bookmarked your post.

Also, is Ghost not available in draft around town?

Is Focal Banger the same style DIPA as Heady? I'm talking in terms of hops aroma/flavor used. Or is it more of a cleaner DIPA like Pliny and G&G (yes, i'm comparing Pliny to Grace and Grit). Which hopefully, i'll be able to post a comparison on these 2 this week.

Kimmich is entitled to his opinion on his product, and I'm entitled to mine. I've never once had a beer that was better in the can/bottle than in a glass.

I think it's just an IPA which could be a factor if their style isn't dipa. So many great beers to try though!!!

Focal is an IPA, more on the citrus/fruity side of the hop spectrum. Not sure what you mean by 'cleaner', but it's unfiltered like Heady.

Alchemist releases Heady on a weekly basis. Alchemist wants you to consume their product as quickly as possible because, hey, there will be a new batch next week.

Not really, JK drinks year old Heady and doesn't care. There doesn't appear to be a "you must drink this as soon as possible" philosophy at The Alchemist.

If you tried something like Pliny or an IPA like Hop Hunter, i call those "cleaner" because of appearance and hop presence. It's probably just personal perception on my point, and i'm not saying that ghost or heady is just a beer with a shitload of hops thrown together. What i'm saying is that ghost and heady is like a punch in the face of juicy citrusy hops. I find G&G and Pliney to be a little more refined in terms of appearance and flavor. I don't find them as juicy of an IPA.

ETA: Stupid thread didn't show me there's a whole new page already.

ATL: Yes, Ghost is on draft around town when it is released. But since it only comes out once every few months, it doesn't stay on draft long at the places that tap it. It doesn't sell out in one night or anything, but it doesn't stick around for weeks on end.

I've never drank Heady straight from the can, but I've also never opened a Heady that I wasn't sharing with at least one other person.

Heady>>>>>>>pliny for my tastes. Havent done a ghost side by side. Heady from a can is glorious, the hop resin just builds and builds on your tongue, just the way jk wants it.

Eta: the alchemist cannery was the greatest smelling brewery ive ever been to in my life. Drinking heady on tap there was an indescribable experience.

Guy at parish said Happy's and Taproom should get it Friday.
Probably won't last the weekend.
