You would think a BBQ place would have good BBQ, but according to many replies to this thread, their BBQ sucks, just as I stated.

I've never been there, but it doesn't bill itself as a "BBQ place". Now arguably, a place that isn't a "BBQ place" maybe shouldn't try it, but that's separate and apart.

For a meal that costs me $100 after tip for two people, and all we got was an app and one entree, and two beers, I’d say dog shite.
The brisket was inedible, the andouille was nasty, the potato salad and beans were not good, and the pulled pork was bland.

To piggyback off the other opinions on BBQ in BR, there is only decent pork-based BBQ in the state. I've yet to find good beef BBQ at any restaurant down here. BRQ does decent pork options, but nothing in the beef market compares to what you can get in cities like Houston.

This is so true. I never order brisket at Baton Rouge BBQ restaurants. I stick to chicken, sausage, turkey, or pulled pork. It's always so underwhelming that it's sad an actual restaurant can't cook decent brisket.

I made a delicious brisket on my Traeger and it was better than any brisket I've had in BR. Frustrating.

Edit - LOL at the downvotes on this. It's spot on true about the brisket scene in Baton Rouge.

It's the writing style. It's a mixture of juvenile and old people Facebook.

The beer situation should have been rectified by you at the restaurant

You been on this board long enough to know not to get BBQ in BR

City Pork is a "BBQ place?"

Straight form their website:

Unmistakingly “Louisianan”

Our seasonally-inspired menu strives to blend indigenous culinary delights such as rabbit, duck and fresh Gulf Seafood, with modern cooking techniques in a relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere. Come taste how Chef uses culinary styles from around the world to create dishes that are still unmistakably "Louisianan."

You have some of the worst takes on this whole board.

This is accurate. I was surprised to find out that Antiquetiger was around my age. I feel like I'm reading something that my paw-paw would have written when I read his posts.

The nachos were decent, no complaints.

The ribs were half decent, and the pulled pork was just that, pulled pork, nothing special.

The potato salad tasted like it was Reese’s potato salad from any grocery store, and the beans were probably good the day before, when they were made.

So was it just underwhelming then? They way you described it doesnt sount like "pure dog shite".

Let’s see what’s on the menu:
Baby back ribs
Pulled Pork burnt ends
Pork debris spring rolls
Brisket nachos
Smoked chicken
BBQ salmon
BBQ platter (what we had)
Ribs and peaches
Plus several bbq sandwiches

If this isn’t a bbq restaurant, I don’t know what is

I've been to the Highland location once and the food was good. Used to go to the original location and enjoyed their sandwiches. Never been to the Jefferson location.

I feel like they have an identity crisis. They began as a gourmet sandwich shop and evolved to a restaurant. The Highland location is odd. It's set up like a nice restaurant but they try to give the vibe of the country/farmhouse style (not sure how else to describe it) and it doesn't fit. I think they need to establish their brand and stick with it.

I have heard that they smoke all of their meat at the City Slice Pizza place and bring the smoked meat to the restaurants. Looks like they have a smoker behind the wooden fence in the back parking lot. I have seen them loading up trays of food in their car from there once when I was going to eat lunch at Chipotle.

With restaurants, catering, and running the cafeteria at Catholic, they are killing it in the hospitality business, so I'm sure they don't care what I think.

You're being ridiculous now.

Again, it doesn't bill itself as a BBQ place.

Did you read the menu descriptions of some of these items that you listed? I wouldn't call them "BBQ".

The Pork debris spring rolls are clearly an Asian dish. The BBQ salmon is just grilled salmon with a BBQ sauce glaze.

You're right, it doesn't bill itself as a BBQ place, but they have a BBQ plate and many BBQ items on the menu. It doesn't matter what they claim to be, if they can't make the BBQ good (assuming the OP is correct), then they shouldn't have it on the menu. You don't need to be billed as a BBQ restaurant to expect the menu items to be good.

Thank you, this is my exact thing I’m saying.
If half your menu contains some kind of meat derived from smoking or barbecuing, and you claim you are not a BBQ place, something is not right.

I don't disagree with you here and I also truly believe that if a restaurant has a dish on their menu, it should be good no matter what they are known for.

I'll also agree with whoever said CP has an identity crisis, because they certainly do. I stick to sandwiches and entrees, or even the apps, when I dine there.

That said, your review was hyperbolic

Any reason you left off the majority of the menu that isn't BBQ? Not to mention the "BBQ" salmon is not BBq'ed

Who decides what's good enough to stay on the menu?

I was only listing the bbq/smoked items.

You need to learn how to count. I listed 8 items just on the app and entree menu. There’s only 17 total items on the two sections. Two of those are a steak and pork chops, which I didn’t even list.
Nearly every one of their sandwiches have some kind of smoked or bbq meat on them.
Only thing left is the salad section.

So, I’d say over half their menu is derived from a smoked or bbq meat.
