City Pork and Red Stick Spice (with Pics!)

Over the weekend, the GF and I were running errands and wanted to grab some lunch at Overpass Merchant. Unfortunately, the Merchant was packed to rafters with people and we weren't in the mood for waiting or eating outside (was a hot weekend). So we went to our go-to favorite in City Pork on Jefferson.
Started with a new appetizer: Pork Belly Corndogs. These were delicious. The pork was super tender and flavorful and the batter was thin and had just that nice hint of a corndog taste. The mustard sauce was also delicious.
We then settled on our lunch. I got the chicken club (which was awesome) and she got a friend crawfish salad. She took a few bites but didn't care for the truffle and romano dressing it was tossed with. I actually liked it, so I gave her half of my sandwich and ate most of her salad.
While we waited for the bill, I made the mistake of browsing Instagram and saw Red Stick Spice advertising cupcakes made with berbere (an African spice mix). So of course we had to stop there to try them.
I'm not even going to lie, these were delicious. The berbere spice gave the batter a slightly spicy and sweet taste. The frosting was yogurt based. Inside the cupcakes were chopped dates. Sensational.
We also picked up some other goodies.
Some local honey. Really beautiful floral notes.
This nice elderly couple was there selling this jalapeno relish. They had it served over cream cheese and I thought it would make a great appetizer for an upcoming family party. Good stuff.
I couldn't leave without some of the GOAT coffee. It's not cheap, but this made an exceptional cup of coffee Sunday morning.
So that's about it. Baton Rouge has really come a long way with some cool places as it evolves and grows its own culinary scene. Can't recommend both of these places enough.

I went to city pork under the overpass for breakfast Saturday morning. It was good, but it wasn't expecting to spend $50 on breakfast for my wife, my 2 year old, and myself.

The corn dogs look good. I'm hooked on homemade corn dogs with shrimp, hot dogs, sausage, whatever.

All those food pics and no GF pics? Was she asking why in the frick you were photographing your food before she ate it and neatly arranging your honey and coffee for a perfectly framed photo?

No, because she's not a miserable bitch

So, in other words, she's just as strange as you?

If taking a quick picture of our food and some stuff we bought to share with the posters on TD to raise awareness of some cool spots in BR is strange, then I guess we are strange.

I had the chicken club at the Perkins location and thought it was pretty bad. The chicken had this intensely and weirdly smoked flavor which I did not care for, and I love smoked meats. The chips were good, though. I had the cubano and fries at Jefferson, and the cubano was swimming in mustard like a mayonnaise sandwich, while the fries were saltier than Wendy's when they add a whole shaker's worth - I sent them back. I ain't too impressed with City Pork's sandwich game.

That's a bargain.
I spent $60 just on myself at Mon Ami Gabi in LV a few months ago.
shite was good, too.

So he posted pics in a thread that he started and even mentions in the title it has pics and yet it seems strange to you?
Life must just suck for you.

Interesting. I bought some berbere spice recently, but I don't really know what to do with it. I used it in one dish but it was very experimental. Never thought to combine it with something sweet.

Everything there is good, but the biscuits with sausage gravy during brunch might be my favorite.
I'd like to try that brand of coffee Zombie keeps raving about.

I was "annoyed" when my GF convinced me to run to Red Stick Spice after lunch (I was quite full) for some dumb cupcakes, but these were really delicious; from the batter to the date filling, to the yogurt frosting.
What made it work was the cupcake itself wasn't overly sweet, and had that spicy kick from the berbere. The date mixture was sweet (obviously) and the frosting was very mild in terms of sweetness. The entire product worked perfectly.
