For what it is, Chipotle is not bad. I have a lot of tex-mex options available to me where I live but if I'm somewhere that lacks choices then Chipotle would be a fine alternative.

I'll never understand the infatuation with Izzos.

Chipotle kicks the shite out of all the burrito places in BR. It's also cheaper than all of the other options.
Some chains suck, but good solid concepts that are repeatable and well run are not the devil.

People in my office (Houston) think its unbelievable.
That's sad, because Houston probably has some of the world's best Mexican food.
You can go all over the outskirts and find places with awesome fajitas for like $8.
I always make a point to find a new mexican place when I am in Houston.

No need to go on outskirts, there's plenty of good shite inside the loop. Best tacos I've ever had, 1.50, inside loop.

Since Astroworld was torn down I havn't really made Houston a destination. It's on the way to Austin or San Antonio (family) for me. So I'm always on 610 N or stop before I get to 610.
I have very little experience in the loop. Other than the stadium and Galleria area.

I would much prefer an authentic Mexican burrito than chipotle. Unless chipotle has lengua.

Chipotle is better than anything Baton Rouge has to offer. Izzo's is an embarrassment to all burrito joints, but Qdoba is alright.
You typed those backwards. Qdoba is the suck. Izzo's is the good one.

Galleria area.
That's outside the loop. js

Wow, two more chains at the north gate which doesn't have enough orf or on street parking now. That is going to make for an even bigger CF.

I just moved here in July, so I'm not an authority or anything. I've only left the loop maybe three times since I moved here.

I didn't really even think about parking until you said this. That area really does need a parking garage that's just publicly owned and costs a few bucks a day or something.
And, as far as the two chains, it's not a bad thing, but it's a not a great thing.
The way I look at it is when I have friends make a road trip to BR for an LSU game or whatever and we're in the campus area looking for a bite to eat, are they really going to want to go to or be impressed with a 5 guys or a chipotle? I'd much rather bring visitors somewhere they can't go everywhere else in the country.
Take Walk-On's for example. It's not a bad restaurant, but I wouldn't consider it a great one. A lot of people hate on it despite it being a pretty solid, locally owned place with LSU ties. For all its ups and downs, I would a million times rather this type of establishment open in that prime location than x2 chains that everyone else already has.
I just doesn't do a whole lot to add a good college-town feel.
What about some Tuscaloosa or Athens posters? How are the UA and UGA campus strips and downtown areas next to campus as far as the divide b/t locally owned and chain?
My thought is just that when I bring visitors to walk through campus and the northgate, I don't want to have a "cheap" cookie-cutter box-store feel to it.

Yeah I really don't see how anyone can see them as anything but the same thing.

Kfizzle
Where are these amazing taco/Mexican food places you refered to in Houston? Want to try next time I'm in town. I am completely green when it comes to good Mexican food, and want to broaden my horizons.

I haven't been to Athens in a number of years so I can't speak for it. Tuscaloosa's Strip area and downtown are dominated by local establishments but not as much as in past year's. It's gotten a lot more "chainish" as it's gotten spruced up. For example, the end of the Strip closest to the stadium (almost in front of the Sigma Nu house) was a Qdoba's and is now a Moe's Southwest Grill. The other little spots around there include things like a Guthries, Cold Stone Creamery, etc. Downtown has a Mellow Mushroom and a MugShots but other than these few chains the rest of the Strip and downtown is dominated by local restaurants (especially downtown) with Depalmas, Chuck's, Epiphany's, Ruan Thai, Hooligans, Innisfree, Cafe Venice, etc.
