I’ve remember going there when I was a kid with my family before Katrina. All I remember was that there were no menus and it was well revived back then. Since I was a kid I didn’t really eat my own food so I didn’t have a good idea of the food. Since Katrina, no one in my family has been there since.

Fast forward about 20 years later, I tried it tonight. Still no menus, which I kind of like cuz it’s something they are carrying on with that is unique.
We started off with onion strings and some wine, both were fine no complaints.
Then our meal came, ribeye and sautéed mushrooms for myself and a filet and potatoes a gratin for my girlfriend. Steak was absolutely disappointing, there was no seasoning on the steak. Bland! Super disappointed in the steaks since everyone in my family talked so good about how it use to be. Although the steak was bland and the potatoes a gratin was also missing some flavor, the sauté mushrooms were outstanding along with the service.

Anyways, at least I know my dinner tomorrow at Impastaso’s will be amazing as always!

They never did a good job seasoning the steaks.

Still a unique dining experience

I miss Pietro, the grouchy but lovable old waiter. The quality of the steaks are not top notch, but the prices reflect that. They have had the best onion rings in town for as long as I have been going there which has been about 45 years.

Enjoy tomorrow. I like Charlie's but I would much rather go to Impastato's.

What do you mean by no menus? They just served one dish that night, or was it a Chef's tasting?

no menus as in no menus
you sit down and they ask you what you want

it requires foreknowledge of the options, or the waiter will just tell you

My first time there before Katrina I didn’t know how the place was run. I asked Ms. Dottie for a menu. She told me “you’re looking at the menu”

I've never been, but was strongly considering going during my trip over Labor Day weekend. After reading this, I'm not so sure I want to waste a meal on it. Maybe I should stick with La Boca.

I don’t see any reason to eat at Charlies unless you like to be told what to order.

When people alway say "i dont go to steakhouses because i can cook one just as good at home", Charlie's is the type of place they are talking about

No menus, eh? What happens when you ask for water? They tell you to form your hands into a little cup?

When I went years ago, the menu items were listed on the side of the napkin dispenser. A sticker basically.
