I'm torn between the Big Green Egg XL and the large. I want to be able to do larger cuts of meat and large hams for holidays, but don't want to eat up a ton of excess charcoal ad wait significantly longer for the XL to heat up if I only want to cook a couple steaks during the week. Thoughts? Am I worried about nothing?

Get a primo XL and have the best of all worlds. Big when you want it (full firebox) small when you want it (½ firebox with divider).

I looked at the Primo and three things turned me against it. First, I think the quality of construction is lower. Maybe wrong, but looked at both and that's what I think. Second, I think the XL egg provides almost as much cooking space (maybe more), and third, the egg was cheaper.

Get an XL and a mini. It’s the only logical choice.

How is the XL's charcoal use and heat up time compared to the Large?

Have an XL, no complaints with charcoal useage or heat times, plus when u need the extra area, you have it

I have a large and Smoke whole packers on it. I can’t get the biggest one in the case, but a 10-12# is fine for me. If I were buying today, I’d give kamado joe a hard look in addition to BGE.

KJ is the way to go. I'm biased because i have the Kamado Joe II - Large. But the upgrades they made to the KJ 2 is what pushed me to that over the Egg. Still don't understand why Egg hasn't upgraded their system yet.

Sectional firebox to prevent cracking
Oven gasket
Spring assisted lid
Latch on the lid
Upgraded dampers (no daisy wheel)
Divide and conquer system (half moon grates)

This! I have the XL and love it. If you’re concerned about charcoal using, u can get a divider and only use half the cooking space. I have used all of the available grill space on the XL many times.

BGE has stolen the Divide and Conquer Cooking System, so they have that now. I don't understand why there is not a lawsuit, because it was a blatant ripoff.

How do like the latch? I have a pre-2017 Classic, and I don't think I'd want to bother with a latch.

Speaking of stolen designs and what not has anyone heard anything more on the RTIC ceramic grill that was leaked over the summer and supposed to hit markets this fall/winter?

Love it. Don't know why you wouldn't want a latch. Ensures the lid closes snug.

The new Kamado Joes are NICCCCE. I almost considered selling my BGE to get one.

The combination of the fatter, spongier wire mesh gasket, plus the new hinge which makes the lid essentially weightless, necessitated the latch.

Prior to the upgrade, the felt gasket and gravity was enough.

I’ve got the BGE XL and only have 2 complaints:
1. The hinge/band assembly design is crap. They need to make them out of stainless, the bands need to be wider and the spring design could be better
2. The firebox needs to be deeper. This would expand the distance from the grate to the coals and makes cooking some thing easier.

You can get a firebox divider for the XL. I have the large and my father-in-law just upgraded to the XL. We got him a divider for Christmas so he can do just what you are asking for. I love the XL and will upgrade soon. I have had the large for 10 years now.

One thing I noticed on the XL is the temperature fluctuates a little more than the L. It may just be I'm so used to the Large that i'm to excessive on the vent adjustments.
