I've seen several recipes where you put the steak directly on lump charcoal. Has anyone tried this? I'm kind of scared to. If not what's your favorite way to grill steak.

I usually do reverse sear or Trex, but played around with caveman a couple of times. Use a dry rub and make sure you have clean burning lump, not cheap RO and blow the coals clean before you put the steaks on.

I prefer doing caveman steaks by putting them directly on the gas burner.

I use this method for exclusively skirt steak but haven't done it with thicker cuts yet.

nice coating of salt, put directly on natural lump coals for maybe 2 minutes per side, wrap in heavy duty aluminum foil and let rest. Turns out great every time...super easy and delicious.

I think I first saw it done by Alton Brown.

I do it for flank or skirt. Works fine. Use fresh lump and make sure the ashes are cleaned from your pit

Lump is literally just wood burned down, so yeah they definitely had it. Now if you meant did Caveman have brickets which is charcoal ground and mixed with chemicals and then pressed into the shape, then certainly no they didn't.

What's the benefit of doing them directly over the lump as compared to on a cast iron grate over a hot fire?

Cave men quickly learned to stick a stick in their meat or lay it on rocks. I aint wasting my Q by putting it on coals. if I do it will be wrapped in several layers of foil.

I've done that quite a bit when in the country. Cook a lot more than steaks and get a bigger fire to use more skillets. Make biscuits that way and you are accomplished.

I've also used a Jiffy Pop Popcorn tin.

Caveman Steaks
This type of shite bothers me. It shouldnt, but it does

People eat this caveman shite up

Do we caveman sleep?

"Hey Bill, I had a great caveman sleep last night. Slept on the floor instead of the bed."

Do we caveman winter?

"Hey Bill, it was 15 degrees last night so I huddled in the carport freezing my balls off around a small fire to caveman winter."

Caveman Sous Vide. Take a few brontosaurus steaks, soak them in a hot spring for 2.3 days, dry them off with your wooly mammoth skin clothing, lay directly on the hot coals for a quick sear. Eat it up, then club your cavewoman on the head and drag her out of the cave when she complains it is too red in the middle.
