Flying to Charlotte and driving thru North Carolina on the way to Charleston. What BBQ places do we need to go to.

It is out of the way for your route but Lexington, Nc is known for having some of the best Carolina style bbq.

uhhhhhhh...you realize that you're going to be driving through NC for all of like 30 minutes, right?

Slight detour of the interstate to Holly Hill SC and go to Sweatmans BBQ. It's fantastic. They specialize in a mustard sauce, like most places around that part of SC. One of the best BBQ joints I've been to.

That's about a 4 hr drive.

Apparently you're not good at reading maps, your drive will be through South Carolina. The Dixie Pig in Rock Hill, SC just south of Charlotte has one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've had.

Second Sweatmanns. Also Rodney Scott's BBQ i Hemingway.
If you have time read Rien Fertel's book on Bbq. While I dont agree with the premise (that only whole hog cooked over wood with no gas is the only bbq) he highlights a lot of bbq spots thay could be on your itinerary.

Hite's BBQ in Columbia
Sweatman's for sure. It's AYCE
Rodney Scott just opened up a spot in Charleston as well.
Check out Sean Brock's Husk in Charleston if you can.
@BlackenedOut- from Pork City team

Hudson's in Lexington SC.
Carolina BBQ in New Ellenton SC if you take the back road to Charleston.

Shealy's in Leesville is absolutely amazing. Best mustard BBQ I've ever had, but it would probably add about an hour to your trip.

In Columbia there is a place called Three Little Pigs that has an incredible bbq buffet.

we're going to be spending a few days in North Carolina, spending a week in NC and SC

Lexington BBQ, Skylight Inn, Bridges, and Stameys. However I think most of those will be out of the way. To me Skylight is the best of all the BBQ in NC. Whole hog East Carolina style with cracklings in the chopped meat.

Goddamn, forgot about Skylight Inn. Fantastic bbq.

In Charlotte alone, there's a ton of places that are decent to excellent. Midwood Smokehouse, McKoy's Smokehouse, Bill Spoon's, The Improper Pig, City Barbeque, Mac's Speed Shop, Boone's BBQ Kitchen, Sauceman's, Queen City Q, and City Smoke to name a few. An hour drive west will get you to Bridges Barbeque in Shelby. An hour or so north and there's a ton of BBQ joints in Lexington.

In Charleston go to Home Team, Lewis (TX style front Austin, it's his only other place and it's GOAT), and Scott's BBQ. They're all within .5 miles of each other on the peninsula. Hell, Lewis and Home Team are right next to each other.
