i can't do it. cantaloupe is a fruit and it kills me when people eat it with their rice and gravy. everyone i know does this and it gives me the eebie jeebies.

i mean.......i don't eat watermelon with my gumbo. why in the hell would i eat cantaloupe with my stew.

note- i absolutely love cantaloupe but, i eat it seperate from my main meal.

You ever wonder if you stumbled into a cult?

Just be thankful it’s not the honeydew melon cult.

Dressing: orange juice, honey, salt, red pepper, black pepper all to taste.
Salad. Cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew. Any or all. Your choice. Goat cheese crumbles makes a nice addition,

Great with stew or R&G!

Cantaloupe as a side with rice and gravy is a Cajun prairie thing. I grew up in the Eunice area and it is a very common practice at country dinner tables.

10/10. Will continue to eat cantaloupe/honeydew with R&G.

The only time I've had cantaloupe with my meal is when I made a salad from my garden and cut up small pieces of it to go in the salad to give it some sweetness and it was a very good mix.

Other than that, I eat it cold to cool off after working around the house and yard and as a kid one of my favorite ways to eat it was to cut one in half, scoop out the seeds and then fill the hole with ice cream.

I could easily eat half a large cantaloupe like that back then. Now, I won't even try it.

I had it growing up and my mother still makes the same meal sometimes. Usually mashed potatoes, green beans, fried squash, cantaloupe, and biscuits.

If we’re having rice and gravy and we also have a good cantaloupe, it will be part of the meal.

Is the cantaloupe cooked or something? Why cantaloupe?

Nope. If you are lucky, it is fresh out of the garden.

Is anyone forcing you to put the cantaloupe on your plate? Damn, life isn’t that hard.

In Italy they wrap it in procutto and serve it on platters with toothpics. Sweet and salty and tasty. I love it.

Asked my Cajun MIL about that and she said that was very common in her house growing up.
