Brewhouse of the Rising Sun — Tom Benson Reconstructs a Monument...

...in the Age of Craft Iconoclasts

The article goes on to discuss some Katrina stuff and statue removal stuff, but I'm more interested in the first part of the article. It does seem that Dixie is straddling the line on tied housing the Dome and arena and that the ATC doesn't give a shite about that, yet they care about food trucks at breweries.

Louisiana boasts strong “tied house” laws prohibiting brewers from inducing retailers, directly or indirectly, to purchase any of their products at the exclusion of others. Because of this, some brewers are wary of Benson as both a brewery owner and as a professional sports franchise owner. More specifically, they’re concerned that by virtue of his myriad business interests, he may have unfair pull to get his beers stocked, at the illicit expense of other products, in his two teams’ home stadiums.
“Like, duh, right?” says one high-level Louisiana beer industry executive speaking on condition of anonymity. “You know, really there’s a lot of smoke there that would be an issue."
quote:
At the foundation of their suspicions brewers point to the fact that soon after the sale, Dixie beer quickly found hard-to-earn placement in both arenas, providing massive exposure for the brand and gaining sales that other local breweries only dream of. Furthermore, the arrival of Dixie also coincided with what one source close to the matter suggests was a significant exodus of Abita Brewing products from the two stadiums. (Anecdotally speaking, this wasn’t lost on consumers either, as many took to social media to comment on the apparent swap.)...
...“I would say it’s just a picture,” says Kirk Coco, founder of NOLA Brewing and president of the Louisiana Brewers Guild. “That even though there may not be anything wrong, it makes it look like something is going on, and that can be bad enough for our industry. If they’re carrying Dixie, which is a Memphis-made beer that has ties to New Orleans, you’d think they’d be carrying other New Orleans beers…. It’s definitely a little off putting.”

I've been wondering this since it happened. Rich, don't care, I guess.

Pretty much. It’s louisiana. They aren’t gonna bully the rich guy. Especially not Benson.

The same person cannot have an interest, direct or indirect, in a brewer and a retailer. I'm guessing that the Superdome is the retailer, not Benson. Of course, he certainly receives proceeds of concession sales, but I guess there was enough grey area to let a billionaire get away with it.

Maybe Benson is the perfect person to have lead the chargee to get rid of all the ridiculous laws.
People like Abita and NOLA likely won't like it because it hurts them as big brewers, but it could help the small guys distribute their beers easier.

Do you think Benson gives a shite about the beer industry especially local breweries? He's in this to make money just like every endeavor he gets in to. He will use his power and leverage like he has in every past business deal he has done to benefit himself.

Yeah, I don't see Benson helping the little brewer out. He has enough frick-you money to go around the laws rather than change them.

Word is Benson is going to move the brewery to San Antonio

How is NOLA a big brewer?

NOLA is worrying about getting squeezed out of two retail locations. They aren't worried about the law of owning retail and brewery, unless it effects their shelf space. It behooves NOLA for the law not to change.
It behooves the small brewing industry to remove this law and well as other distribution laws.

Wont happen, liquor lobby is strong and most legislators are drunks.

It appears Coco is wanting the law to be enforced. And he is speaking on behalf of the brewers guild.

I would think Dixie would be better able to undercut on price when promoting Dixie to the LSED/Centerplate since Benson gets 40%+ of the concession proceeds and the exposure is valuable.

Cary is the executive director of the guild. Kirk is the president.

Truth! Plus they need that free booze to get the hot pages drunk enough to submit to their harassment.
